About the book:

A course was recently organised and held in Naples, Italy,
presenting an introduction to the usage of those mathematical techniques
- some being still in evolution, as the catastrophe, bifurcation and
singularity theories - which are being acknowledged as very powerful
in tackling a rather wide range of problems of chemical reactor dynamics,
from the analysis of multiplicity of states to the kinetic lumping
techniques. The course material was edited to constitute the body of
this volume, with the aim of enlarging the possibly interested audience.
A desired effect would hopefully be to draw the attention of the
mathematical community towards a highly receptive application area,
and of possibly stimulating the development of new textbooks on the
"usage" of modern advanced mathematics.
The organisation of the course and the publication of the book were
made possible thanks to several different institutions, whose support
is gratefully acknowledged. The royalties coming from the sale of
any copy of the book go to the Department of Chemical Engineering,
University of Naples "Federico II".

Subject: Solving Sparse Linear Equations on the T3D

A colleague in Applied Mathematics requires to solve
a system of linear equations having the following
characteristics. The coefficient matrix is of order
50000; it is symmetric, possibly singular, with
complex elements on its diagonal. There are multiple
right hand sides. Currently he is using, not very
successfully, a bi-conjugate gradient method - so it
may be the case that the square of the coefficient
matrix is ill-conditioned. He would like to have a
stable method which can make efficient use of the
Cray T3D. Has anyone encountered problems of this
sort? If so, can you suggest a good method to use?

The NEOS (Network-Enabled Optimization System) Server

The NEOS Server is now available for general access.
The Server provides remote solution of optimization
problems over the Internet. Users can submit problems
via email, ftp, or the World Wide Web.
Results are returned via email and/or their Web browser.

The NEOS server uses state-of-the-art algorithms to solve
optimization problems automatically with minimal input from
the user. For example, users with nonlinear problems can opt
to have derivatives calculated automatically. The NEOS Server
currently solves problems in the following areas:

Linear Programming
Unconstrained Minimization
Stochastic Linear Programming
Bound Constrained Minimization
Linear Network Optimization

Solvers in other optimization areas are under development.
