It fills me with sadness to have to inform you of the death of
Professor Saul Abarbanel.

Saul Abarbanel was born 1 June 1931 in Montclair, New Jersey, USA. He
grew up in Tel-Aviv, and then went to the United and attended MIT,
where he received a BS and MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics and his
PhD Theoretical Aerodynamics. He did his post-doctoral work at the
department of Applied Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of
Science, and then returned to MIT where he was appointed Assistant
Professor in 1961and promoted to Associate Professor in 1964. He
returned to Israel and was department head of Applied Mathematics at
Tel-Aviv University where in 1970 he was promoted to Professor. He
also served as the Dean of Science, Vice Rector and Rector of Tel-Aviv
University. He was consultant to NASA and was Visiting Professor at
various times at MIT, Brown and University of California, Berkeley. In
1992 he was awarded the Scientific Achievement Award by NASA.

Subject: Sparse Grids and Applications, Germany, Jul 2018

Call for submission: The 5th Workshop on Sparse Grids and Applications
Munich, Germany, July 23-27, 2018.

Sparse grids have gained increasing interest in recent years for the
numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. Where classical
numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four
dimensions, sparse grids allow to overcome the curse of dimensionality
to some extent - increasing the number of dimensions that can be dealt
with. The aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners
using sparse grids and their variants, and both theoretical and
practical talks are highly welcome. Possible topics related to sparse
grids and their applications include but are not limited to:
spatially/dimensionally adaptive refinement; complexities and error
bounds; wavelets; high-order methods; data mining (classification,
regression, clustering, etc.); (stochastic) partial differential
equations; interpolation and quadrature; parameter identification;
integral equations; dimensionality reduction; efficient/parallel data
structures; sparse grid software; applications using sparse grids;
uncertainty quantification.

More information about the workshop can be found at:

- Abstract submission: Feb. 1, 2018
- Acceptance notification: Mar. 1, 2018

Subject: PhD Position, Continuous Optimization

The Chair of Economics, Discrete Optimization and Mathematics invites
applications for a PhD position in continuous optimization at the
Department of Mathematics to be filled for a period of three years.
The successful applicant will work in the project "Energy efficiency
via intelligent district heating networks" in cooperation with the
academic partners University Trier, TU Berlin, and Fraunhofer
Institute for Industrial Mathematics as well as the industrial partner
Technische Werke Ludwigshafen am Rhein AG. The project is funded by
the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The focus of the
project will be the development of model hierarchies and solution
techniques for coupled district heating networks. The main idea is to
develop optimization algorithms based on continuous (and, maybe, later
on mixed-integer) optimization that control the overall model accuracy
by exploiting error estimates defined on the modeling hierarchy. The
developed algorithms will be analyzed theoretically and need to be
implemented in a programming language like C++ or Python.

We seek excellent open-minded and team-spirited PhD candidates that
should have completed their studies at master level in a program with
strong mathematical background in optimization.

The chair EDOM - Economics, Discrete Optimization, Mathematics (Chair
Wirtschaftsmathematik) consists of 20+ PhD students and Postdocs and
has more than fifteen years of experience in modeling and solving
complex and very large-scale planning and decision problems from
logistics, energy, production, engineering, and the natural sciences,
see https://www.mso.math.fau.de/de/edom/. Their key expertise is in
developing and applying models and algorithms, which yield proven
optimal solutions to optimization problems. This involves techniques
like linear, nonlinear, and integer programming, robust optimization,
graph algorithms, polyhedral combinatorics, and the like.

Please send your complete application documents (motivation letter,
detailed CV, certificates, list of MSc courses and grades, copy of the
master thesis, reference letter, etc.) as one PDF to mar.schmidt@fau.de
