Subject: Mondriaan 4.2: Sparse Matrix Partitioning Package


We would like to announce the availability of version 4.2 of the
Mondriaan sparse matrix partitioning package. Mondriaan can be used as
a (sequential) preprocessing tool for large parallel sparse
matrix-vector multiplications.

Version 4.2 contains several improvements and extensions:
- Improved load balance by moving free nonzeros after every
bipartitioning.
- Improved speed.
- A zero-volume search based on finding connected components before
bipartitioning, to perform easy splits quickly if they exist.
- MondriaanStats program to quickly determine the communication volume
and other statistics about a computed partitioning.

Subject: Software Release: MORLAB 3.0


Version 3.0 of the MORLAB (Model Order Reduction LABoratory) toolbox
has been released. The toolbox is a collection of MATLAB/OCTAVE
routines for model order reduction of linear dynamical systems based
on the solution of matrix equations. The implementation is based on
spectral projection methods, e.g., methods based on the matrix sign
function and the matrix disk function.

The toolbox contains implementations for standard and descriptor
systems:
- Modal truncation
- Balanced truncation
- Bounded-real balanced truncation
- Positive-real balanced truncation
- Balanced stochastic truncation
- Linear-quadratic-Gaussian balanced truncation
- H-infinity balanced truncation
- Hankel-norm approximation
Also, matrix equation solvers based on the matrix sign function as
well as further subroutines for linear dynamical systems can be found
in the MORLAB toolbox.

Performance Computational Mathematics

The Virginia Tech Department of Mathematics anticipates a tenure-track
opening in High Performance Computational Mathematics with a start
date of August 10, 2018, at our Blacksburg, VA, campus. The successful
candidate will have a strong background in computational mathematics
and high performance computing. Possible specialties include, but are
not limited to, mathematical aspects of numerical linear algebra,
randomized numerical linear algebra, inverse problems, numerical PDE
modeling, PDE solvers, uncertainty quantification, scientific
computing, scalable data analytics, or large-scale topological data
analysis. Application areas of interest include, but are not limited
to, geophysics, physics, biology, or economics. The successful
applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across
the university on the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human- Centered

part of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, and we particularly
