Subject: LAFF again!


On Aug. 1 2017, we will again offer "Linear Algebra: Foundations to
Frontiers" (LAFF) on the edX platform (edx.org). LAFF is an
introductory course on linear algebra that links abstractions in
mathematics to abstractions in code. The course targets many
audiences, ranging from novices to those wanting a refresher. Some
take it as a semester-long course. Others finish it in a few weeks.

We have used these resources in a number of different ways:
- As an alternative to a traditional textbook for an introductory
undergraduate linear algebra course targeting students with
computational interests.
- As resources for those who want to pursue research with us.
- As background/reference materials for a Numerical Linear Algebra
graduate level course.

Importantly, the course stresses abstractions like partitioning of
matrices and layering of operations similar to how linear algebra
libraries layer in terms of the BLAS. Many of the "enrichments"
introduce concepts in HPC.

Subject: Release of StochSS Version 1.9


StochSS: Stochastic Simulation Service is an integrated development
environment for modeling and simulation of discrete stochastic
biochemical systems. An easy-to-use GUI enables researchers to quickly
develop and simulate biological models on a desktop or laptop, which
can then be expanded or combined to incorporate increasing levels of
complexity. As the demand for computational power increases, StochSS
is able to seamlessly scale up by deploying cloud computing
resources. The software currently supports simulation of ODE and
well-mixed discrete stochastic models, parameter estimation of
discrete stochastic models, and simulation of spatial stochastic
models.

New capabilities of Version 1.9 include:
1. Support for simulation and parameter sweep jobs on batch cluster
computing (i.e. Qsub based computing clusters)
2. Configuration of batch computing resources
3. Enhancements to multi-user setup, including email authentication

An EU-funded research position is available at the University of Bath
to accelerate Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) Methods for Novel Solar Cell
Design (EU Horizon2020 Energy Oriented Centre of Excellence, EoCoE).
The aim of the project at Bath is a multiscale study of novel
perovskite solar cell materials. The postdoc will join an
interdisciplinary team lead by Prof A Walker (Physics), including Prof
R Scheichl and Dr K Yates (Mathematics), as well as Prof S Islam
(Chemistry).

In the remaining 12 months of the project, using the parameters
obtained from atomistic simulations at the microscale, work will focus
on predicting device behaviour using KMC simulations at the mesoscale,
computing current-voltage characteristics, charge mobilities, etc.

KMC is closely related to the Gillespie algorithm. Walker is one of
the leading researchers in the development and application of
KMC. This project will focus on 'reengineering' the computationally
intensive parts of KMC with a view of improving the overall
performance and making them more suited to supercomputers with high
concurrency. In particular, we intend to investigate novel multilevel
Monte Carlo ideas, as well as fast, parallel Poisson solvers for the
modelling of long-range interactions. The postdoc will be based in the
Department of Mathematical Sciences.
