When building a mathematical model to describe the behavior of a
physical system, one has often to face a certain level of uncertainty
in the proper characterization of the model parameters and input
data. Examples appear in the description of flows in porous media,
behavior of living tissues, combustion problems, deformation of
composite materials, meteorology and atmospheric models, etc. The
increasing computer power and the need for reliable predictions have
pushed researchers to include uncertainty models, often in a
probabilistic setting, for the input parameters of otherwise
deterministic mathematical models.

In this series of lectures we focus on mathematical models mostly
based on Partial Differential Equations with stochastic input
parameters (coefficients, forcing terms, boundary conditions, shape of
the physical domain, etc.), and review the most used numerical
techniques for propagating the input random data onto the solution of
the problem.

This workshop will focus on various aspects of modeling, simulation
and optimization (MSO) Tools for dynamical multi-physics systems. The
aim is to bring together developers and users of MSO tools together
with people working in practice. The workshop will offer the
possibility for detailed discussions and the initiation of
cooperations for scientists in academia and industry working on or
with MSO tools.

Special emphasis will be given to multi-physics applications in
multibody systems, electrical circuits, bioprocess engineering,
chemical reactions, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.

The presentations and discussions will cover
- Modeling and regularization/remodeling
- Coupled, hierarchical and multiscale dynamical systems
- Numerical simulation and control
- Error control and uncertainties in numerical simulation and control
- Software issues for MSO-tools

Every talk should address the state of the art of current research as
well as open questions and requirements for further theoretical
research in algorithm and software development. The talks should be
accessible to participants from different application fields.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA)
in applied numerical mathematics modelling to work with Professor
D. Lesnic on an EPSRC-funded project entitled "Robustness-performance
optimisation for automated composite manufacture". The successful
applicant will also collaborate closely with academic partners on the
project Cranfield University, University of Nottingham and University
of Bristol.

The activity in which the PDRA will be full-time and fully engaged
will focus on the estimation of the anisotropic permeability and
thermal conductivity governing the filling and curing stages of
composites manufacturing and their uncertainty. These variables, which
are not directly observable using monitoring technologies, will be
identified based on information on observables (fibre angle and tow
width) and the homogenisation models available. The uncertainty
arising from the variability of the matrix, disturbances in fibre
architecture due to local compression and measurement errors in
observables will be estimated perhaps using a combination of
regularisation and Bayesian inference. The outcome of this activity
will be a system capable of identifying the probability distribution
of the anisotropic components of permeability and thermal conductivity
based on thermal, cure and flow monitoring signals and on information
on the fibre orientation from Automated Fibre Placement (AFP)
monitoring. The results will be used for stochastic simulations of
flow/cure in subsequent tasks.

A strong background in mathematics, scientific computing or related
areas is required. In particular, candidates should have some
experience with stochastic partial differential equations, finite or
boundary element methods, Bayesian inference and inverse problems.

This full-time position is available from June/July and will be
offered on a fixed-term contact for a period of 12 months. The

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the SIGMA
(Simulations of Geophysical Multi-phAse flows) group at the Department

Candidates should have an interest in Earth Science and Computational
Fluid Dynamics. Proficiency in C/C++, Matlab or a suitable substitute
is required. Previous experience in developing numerical models for
coupled systems of partial differential equations is highly
desirable. Potential applications range from ice-stream modeling in
West Antarctica to developing computational models of volcanic
eruptions and lava flows.

Salary for the position will be determined by the University
commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a
research allowance for travel and miscellaneous expenses. Starting
date is negotiable, but ideally the candidate would be available to

next-generation multicore high-performance scientific computing. The
position is part of a larger effort involving the Computational
Research Division at LBNL and the National Energy Research Scientific
Computing Center (NERSC).

The Scientific Computing Group is focused on enabling scientific
discovery through the development of advanced software applications,
tools, and libraries in key research areas, as well as the development
of scientific computing applications and capabilities for the
integration and analysis of complex data from simulation and
experiment.

The candidate will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
composed of computer, computational, and applied math scientists
conducting research and development for next-generation
high-performance computing. The focus of the candidate will be on
research and development in the computational chemistry domain area
