Subject: The OpenLB Project: New Release 0.8 Available

The OpenLB developer team is very happy to announce that a new release
of the open source Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) code is available
for download on the project website http://www.openlb.net/ . Besides
many new features, a lot of new interfaces have been added. Have a
look and be excited: you will find OpenLB much more user-friendly.

New features are:
- New model to simulate flows in isotropic porous media
(PorousBGKdynamics).
- New model to simulate turbulent flows (SmagorinskyBGKdynamics,
smagorinskyMRTdynamics, yPlus functor).
- New model (Bouzidi) for curved boundaries (OffLatticeBoundaryConditions)
with automatic assignment from stl-files.
- All examples updated with a newly developed generic structure which
will help to set up user-defined examples more easily. The layout
now always includes functions for initialization of the lattice and
the geometry, the re-setting of boundary values before and during
the simulation and the writing of data to the console and vtk-files.
- New feature for semi-automatic setting of inflow and outflow
materials using region growing, rename, rename by analytical defined
function or rename by distance to surface form a stl-file.
- Generic Functor concept implemented which includes new features and
enables user-friendly handling of pre- and post-processing
- New example (examples/aorta3d) illustrating new features like the
Smagorinski model, Bouzidi boundary condition and functors.

Subject: LINCOA (LINearly Constrained Optimization Algorithm)

Please send me an e-mail if you would like to receive a free copy of
the LINCOA Fortran software, which I have developed for minimization
subject to general linear constraints on the variables when
derivatives of the objective function are not available. There are no
restrictions on its use. I seem to have succeeded in making the amount
of routine work so small that it is sometimes possible for the number
of variables to be in the hundreds. Much larger problems, however,
would require attention to be given to sparsity, which I have not
done. I am happy with the performance of LINCOA on small problems too,
especially when one wants a local minimum to high accuracy without a
good starting point. Trust regions are employed, with quadratic models
that are updated by the symmetric Broyden method.

Hierarchical matrix techniques can be used to treat dense matrices
efficiently. Applications include
- the construction of preconditioners for elliptic PDEs,
- the discretization of integral operators,
- the evaluation of matrix functions and
- the approximation of solutions of matrix equations.

The key idea is to use a data-sparse representation of the dense
matrix and perform operations like the matrix-vector multiplication,
matrix multiplication, factorization or inversion preserving this
representation.

The winter school consists of lectures and exercises. The lectures
present the fundamental concepts of hierarchical matrices, e.g.,
compression techniques and algorithms for algebraic operations. The
exercises offer participants the opportunity to experience
hierarchical matrices in a number of applications, e.g., by
constructing an approximation of an integral equation or a
preconditioner for an elliptic PDE.

Differential Equations (ANANUM), a three-year project financed by

are sought in all areas related to Numerical Analysis of PDEs.
Applicants should have finished their doctoral work not before

- Multiscale and wavelet methods for PDEs, PDE-constrained control
problems, numerical finance (Prof. Kunoth).

They are expected to participate in the regular assistant duties at
the institute concerning teaching and administration. We are
searching for candidates with a very good Master's or PhD degree in
Mathematics or a related area who possess a profound knowledge in the
numerics of PDEs and in the implementation and development of
algorithms. We require substantial language skills in both German and
English as well as interest in working in interdisciplinary research
projects.
