Subject: Vectorising code to take advantage of modern CPUs

It is possible to speed up computer programs running on modern
processors by making use of a technique called vectorisation. The basic
idea of vectorisation is that each core in a modern CPU can operate on
multiple values (i.e. a vector) simultaneously per instruction cycle.
A typical modern processor has 4 or more of these vector units (one
per core) where each vector unit can operate on up to 8 single
precision, or 4 double precision, values simultaneously. Thus, it is
possible to obtain speed-ups of up to 32 times using vectorisation
techniques on a modern quad-core processor.

The aim of the recently founded new GAMM Activity Group "Mathematical
Signal- and Image Processing" is to foster communication and
collaboration of all researchers or groups interested in mathematical
signal- and image processing. One particular goal is to encourage
close interactions and collaborations between mathematicians, computer
scientists, and engineers working in all areas related to the broad
research field of mathematical signal and image processing.

This includes the application of, for instance, Applied Harmonic
Analysis and Frame Theory, Compressed Sensing, Geometric and
Topological Techniques, Mathematical Morphology, Partial Differential
Equations, Probabilistic and Statistical Methodologies, Variational
Methods, in the exemplary areas of Signal and Image acquisition,
Signal and image processing, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning.

For our members we provide a newsletter in the area of mathematical
signal and image processing, and to particularly support our young
members, we provide a job forum. Besides an annual meeting of our
group, our members organize various sections at the main international
conferences as well as at the annual GAMM conferences. We also hold
close relations to other international groups with a similar research

Municipal leaders who run the complex network of diverse people,
expected services and aging infrastructure are on a constant search
for more efficient ways to analyze data, anticipate problems and
coordinate resources in their cities. Developing methods for
fulfilling such a need involves, among other things, data analytics
and intelligent sensor dissemination, modeling human demands and
operations and planning, often under uncertainty.

We invite submissions of a short abstract (not more than 4000
characters) describing original work on applications of methods, with
special emphasis on optimization, for "making our cities smarter".
Techniques and applications of interest include (but are not limited
to): Constraint Programming; Mathematical Programming; Hybrid

on nonlinear optimization, in particular Mixed Integer Nonlinear
Programming (MINLP) problems, which combine nonlinear constraints with
integrality on one or more variables. MINLP and Constraint Programming
(CP) have a significant overlap of techniques, ranging from domain
reduction to implicit enumeration techniques to heuristic algorithms
for finding good feasible solutions. The workshop aims at attracting
both CP and MINLP practitioners to discuss new developments. It is
motivated by recent exciting results in both disciplines.

Invited speakers: Katya Scheinberg and Pascal Van Hentenryck

We encourage the submission of new challenging problems, especially
those that are not available in online libraries such as minlp.org,

Postdoctoral fellowship: topological and geometrical analysis of
numerical data

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow to
apply mathematical analysis to better understand numerical data issued
from computer simulations. We are especially interested the
topological and geometrical analysis of non-linear vector fields, in
order to develop new data visualization software components for the
scientific community at UPMC. The candidate will work closely with
researchers and engineers at ICS and will interact with scientists
from various disciplines. ICS offers HPC computing facilities and a
vizwall (visualization platform) that will be used to implement the
new software and to promote the results among the academic and
industrial partners.

The contract is initially intended for one year, and can be extended
for another year. This contract is part of an initiative at UPMC to
support interdisciplinary research involving scientific computing and
simulation. The funding is provided within the national initiative
Labex CalSimLab (ICS).

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has several

positioned to contribute to porous media research in several
directions including subsurface applications and industrial porous

1. Multiscale simulation in filtration. Required Experience:

The Householder Symposium XIX on Numerical Linear Algebra will be held
in Spa, Belgium, 8-13 June 2014.

This symposium is the nineteenth in a series, previously called the
Gatlinburg Symposia, and will be hosted by the Universite catholique
de Louvain and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

The Symposium is very informal, with the intermingling of young and
established researchers a priority. Participants are expected to
attend the entire meeting. The fifteenth Householder Award for the
best thesis in numerical linear algebra since 1 January 2011 will be
presented.

Attendance at the meeting is by invitation only. Applications will be
solicited from researchers in numerical linear algebra, matrix theory,
and related areas such as optimization, differential equations, signal
processing, and control. Each attendee will be given the opportunity
to present a talk or a poster. Some talks will be plenary lectures,
while others will be shorter presentations arranged in parallel
sessions.

The application deadline will be some time in Fall 2013. It is
expected that partial support will be available for some
students,early career participants, and participants from countries
with limited resources.

The Householder Symposium takes place in cooperation with the Society
for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the SIAM Activity
Group on Linear Algebra.
