Subject: Smale Prize Awarded

The Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics awarded
the first Smale Prize to Professor Snorre Christiansen at its FoCM'11
meeting in Budapest on July 14, 2011. Symbolic of the prize, Professor
Christiansen was given a G=F6mb=F6c, the first known homogeneous object
with one stable and one unstable equilibrium point.

The Smale Prize recognizes major achievements in furthering the
understanding of the connections between mathematics and
computation. The award is named after Stephen Smale who contributed
greatly to this understanding and many other fields of mathematics as
well as being key to the founding of the Society. The prize is awarded
to a researcher having received a doctoral degree within the 10 years
prior to the award.

Professor Christiansen of the University of Oslo, Norway, was awarded
the prize for his contributions to computational mathematics of
partial differential equations. Most of Professor Christiansen's work
is motivated by the design of numerical methods for various equations
arising in physics. The citation made particular note of his use of
Calderon=92s formulas to construct preconditioners for the electric
field equations, his contributions to the development of exterior
calculus and cohomological analysis of finite element methods, and his
convergence results for lattice gauge theory. Further information

Subject: Algebraic Multigrid Software

We are pleased to announce the release of AGMG 3.0, a software package
that implements an aggregation-based algebraic multigrid method.

AGMG comes either as a function that may be called from Matlab
environment, or as a Fortran 90 subroutine that may be linked with an
application program. Both versions have been designed to be easy to
use by non experts (in a black box fashion). A Fortran 90 parallel
implementation is also provided.

Version 3.0 is a major release that integrates our latest research
efforts. The aggregation procedure is now based on the explicit
control of some quality indicators. This allows to guarantee
theoretical convergence properties for some class of input matrices.
For general matrices, this makes the method more robust and the
convergence slightly faster on average than with the previous
versions.

US-SA workshop "Mathematical Methods in Systems Biology and Population
Dynamics" African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, AIMS, Cape Town,
South Africa, January 4-7, 2012, http://www.siue.edu/CAS/AIMS/

This workshop will bring together applied mathematicians with
researchers working in various biological and medical fields in order
to exchange ideas and advance research by initiating and promoting
collaborations motivated by challenging problems. These include the
spread of infectious diseases (epidemiology) or the growing need for
robust and reliable models in ecology, both of special importance in
the host country of South Africa, where research naturally has focused
on fighting disease and epidemics. In the US, on the other hand, a
strong emphasis exists on Systems Biology and especially on its
aspects related to cancer. Therefore a second focus area of the
workshop will be about improved and more realistic models for the
dynamic progression and treatment for various types of cancer, a truly
global challenging problem.

The workshop is expected to have an important educational impact
because of the unique character of AIMS, which is a center for
graduate studies in the mathematical sciences in Africa with emphasis
on mathematical biology. We particularly encourage the participation
of graduate students and junior researchers. We have some support from
local sponsors and as well as from the National Science Foundation and
the Society for Mathematical Biology.

The Seminar for Applied Mathematics of ETH Zuerich

offers full PhD positions in the framework of an interdisciplinary
project on "Computational Nano-Optics".

Nano-optics studies and exploits the interaction of light with matter
at sub-wavelength length scales. The project has a focus on numerical
methods, algorithm development, and efficient implementation.

The positions are temporary and limited to 3-4 years. The holder will
be regular ETH research staff and receive a gross salary of roughly
68,000 Swiss Francs (currently about USD 85,000, EUR 60.000).

Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in mathematics,
physics, a (computational) engineering discipline, or in
(computational) science. Their education record should indicate strong
interest and exceptional skills in computer simulation as well as
familiarity with important numerical methods for the approximate
solution partial differential equations (finite elements, finite
volumes, etc.). Experience with object oriented programming in C++ is
essential.

Knowledge of German is not required, but the candidates must possess
good communication skills and should be fluent in English, both oral
and in writing.
