Following the success of previous years, CSC/NAG are again running the
Autumn School "Core Algorithms for High Performance Scientific
Computing", 26 Sep - 30 Sep 2011 at the Centre for Scientific
Computing, Univ of Warwick.

Description: Many scientific calculations can be cast as problems in
computational linear algebra and optimisation. Powerful algorithms for
such problems form a common core of most scientific software. This
school will develop a solid grounding in the mathematics of these
algorithms; discuss the efficient implementation in a range of
standard libraries and demonstrate effective use in real,
high-performance scientific applications.

Aimed at: This school is ideal for beginning PhD students or Postdocs

Postdoc: numerical simulation of complementarity systems, with
applications to power electronic circuits

Power electronic converters make use of semiconductor components
operating at a high switching frequency to reach the desired dynamics
at a slower time scale. Modeling and simulation methods are
indispensable for the design and analysis of these converters. Because
of the large difference in time scales, non-smooth methods are needed
to make a fast simulation possible. Recent research results indicate
the potential of complementarity systems, a subclass of hybrid
systems, in modeling and simulation power electronic systems.

We have a vacancy for a junior postdoc (less than 5 years experience
after PhD) whose task is to develop numerical methods for
time-integration (simulation) and control of switched complementarity
systems. The emphasis lies on generic methods and software, whose
application is not exclusively limited to power electronic systems.

The postdoc position result from a joint project between the
Scientific Computing Research Group (htt://twr.cs.kuleuven.be) and the
Division Electa (http://www.esat.kuleuven.be/electa/) of the
K.U. Leuven. The requirements are a strong background in computational
mathematics, in particular numerical time-integration (simulation), a

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to take on the numerical and
computational challenges arising in an international research
collaboration that aims to develop an evolutionary ecology vegetation
model capable of predicting vegetation structures favored under
different environmental conditions. The model is physiologically
structured and represented mathematically by a non-local partial
differential equation, i.e., by a PDE in which coefficients depend on
non-local properties of the solution.

A major objective of your work will be the development of a fast
solver for non-local partial differential equations and the
development of related computational tools required for simulations.
There is also scope for studying vegetation dynamics and for
developing algorithms and methods for studying phenotypic evolution in
physiologically structured population models.

The stipend is initially available for a period of one year, with a
possible prolongation for an additional year. The post-doc will work
in close collaboration with our international partners, including the
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in
Laxenburg, Austria, and Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. The
position is expected to entail visits and secondments to one or both
of these institutions, possibly for durations of up to several months.

Project description:
Technological plasmas are used in industry for applications ranging
from depositing coatings on glasses to growing thick films of
specialised materials. This PhD will concentrate on developing a
model of a diamond growing plasma reactor, using the AptoFEM
finite-element software platform (http://www.aptofem.com). The
challenges of the project lie in understanding plasmas, ranging from
how the energy is deposited, the chemical reactions taking place, and
the transport processes for the energy and the chemical species, and
in developing suitable numerical methods for solving the equations
describing these processes. The benefits of a successful project will
include enabling the growth of higher quality diamond products useful
in applications ranging from lasers to fusion reactors. The
successful student will spend approximately three months during the
course of the project at Element Six transferring the model so that it
can be routinely used within the company.

Eligibility and Funding:
Applicants should have (or expect to receive) a first or upper-second
class degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, physics or a related
physical sciences discipline. Some computer programming experience is
essential and familiarity with FORTRAN 95 highly desirable. The
studentship is available for a period of three and a half years from
October 2011 and provides an annual stipend of =A313,590 per annum,
together with a CASE enhancement of =A32,000 per annum and full payment
