Subject: Pictorial history of Gaussian elimination

Hello NA-Digest,

I have published a pictorial history of Gaussian elimination. People
who worked on "numerical linear algebra" long before it was called
that are shown, and there is a rare picture of a clay tablet that
poses one of the oldest linear algebra problems, from 2000-1600 BC.

Subject: New OpenLB Release 0.6

The OpenLB developer team is happy to announce that a new release of
our open source Lattice Boltzmann code is available for download on
the project website http://openlb.net/ .

The new release offers an automated preprocessing with built-in
voxelization from stl-files and setting of boundary conditions based
on material numbers. The usage is illustrated by the example
"examples/cylinder3d". Further, an XML reader offers an interface for
input parameters (cf. "examples/cavity2d").

Please consider to contribute code or join the developer team yourself
to strengthen the LB community by sharing your findings in an open and
easy reproducible way.

Subject: PLASMA 2.4.0 has been released

The Parallel Linear Algebra Software for Multicore
Architectures (PLASMA) version 2.4.0 has been released.

This package contains several new important routines including:

* LAPACK-compliant LU factorization,
* symmetric eigenvalue problem routines
(eigenvalues only, no eigenvectors yet),
* singular value decomposition routines
(singular values only, no singular vectors yet),
* generalized eigenvalue problem routines
(symmetric positive definite systems only),
* tree-based QR and LQ routines supporting all input parameters
(Left/Right, NoTrans/Trans/ConjTrans).

The package is available for download in the Software section
of the PLASMA website:

Nominations are invited for the 2012 Beale-Orchard-Hays Prize for
excellence in computational mathematical programming that will be
awarded at the International Symposium on Mathematical Programming to
be held in Berlin in August 2012.

The Prize is sponsored by the Mathematical Optimization Society, in
memory of Martin Beale and William Orchard-Hays, pioneers in
computational mathematical programming. Nominated works must have been
published between Jan 1, 2009 and Dec 31, 2011, and demonstrate
excellence in any aspect of computational mathematical
programming. "Computational mathematical programming" includes the
development of high-quality mathematical programming algorithms and
software, the experimental evaluation of mathematical programming
algorithms, and the development of new methods for the empirical

Institute of Mathematics and its Applications
Ninth International Conference on Mathematics in Signal Processing
17th =96 20th December 2012, Austin Court, Birmingham, UK

Signal processing constitutes an important area for the application of
mathematical concepts and techniques fuelled, for example, by
developments in mobile communications, multimedia systems and digital
TV. The subject is still advancing rapidly in areas such as
non-linear/non-Gaussian/non- stationary signal processing, compressive
sampling, digital communication systems, iterative estimation
(e.g. turbo codes), blind deconvolution/signal separation and
broadband systems. The last IMA conference on this subject was held in
December 2008 and in response to popular demand, the next one will be
held in December 2012. The aim of the conference is to bring together
mathematicians, statisticians and engineers with a view to exploring
recent developments and identifying fruitful avenues for further
research.

The conference will follow the same successful format as before,
comprising a keynote address and six non-overlapping sessions:
(a) two or three spoken papers with some tutorial content
(b) a related poster session for more specific research papers.

Contributed papers are invited on all aspects of mathematics in signal
processing and will be accepted on the basis of a 300-500 word
abstract which should be submitted by 2 May 2012 online at

The Computational Seismology Group of the Swiss Seismological Service,
ETH Zurich, invite applications for a PhD student position to work on
the seismological aspects of the ASCETE project "Advanced Simulation
of Coupled Earthquake and Tsunami Events" recently funded by the
Volkswagen Stiftung. ASCETE is a project jointly with the Dept. of
Earth and Environmental Sciences of LMU M=FCnchen, Dept. of Numerical
Methods in Geosciences of Universit=E4t Hamburg and the Institute for
Parallel and Distributed Systems of Universit=E4t Stuttgart. The main
objective of this project is to study the interaction between the
undersea earthquake source rupture process, ocean bottom
displacements, and the corresponding sea level disturbance to further
evaluate the subsequent potential tsunami generation. The problem will
be tackled through purely numerical modeling using the Discontinuos
Galerkin (DG) finite element methods. The successful candidate will
work on high-performance computational simulations of earthquake
ruptures dynamic, developing and implementing constitutive friction
laws of rate and state in the DG-method, to investigate the role of
friction laws on geometrical complex faults in subduction zones and
their effects on the ground motion and ocean bottom displacements. The
students will work in close collaboration with scientists of the
institute mentioned above and will need to spend some time in one or
more institutions of the ASCETE partners. Information on this project

The position is available from October 2011 or soon after and is
funded for three years, the anticipated time needed for obtaining a
Ph.D. degree at ETH Zurich. Applicants should have a M.Sc. or Diploma
in geosciences, physics, applied mechanics, engineering or a related
field. Strong analytical skills, experience in numerical models for
wave propagation, programming and visualization (MATLAB, FORTRAN, UNIX
shells), fluency in English and readiness to work in an international
and multidisciplinary team are essential for the position. Knowledge
of Discontinuos Galerkin finite element methods would be advantageous.
