Subject: SIAG/APDE Prize, Call for Nominations, May 15

The SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations
(SIAG/APDE) will present the SIAG/APDE Prize at the SIAM Conference on
Analysis of PDE (PD11) to be held November 14-17, 2011, in San Diego,
California.

The SIAG/APDE Prize is awarded to the author(s) of the most
outstanding paper on a topic in PDE published in English in a
peer-reviewed journal within the four calendar years preceding the
year of the award. For the 2011 award, the eligibility period is
January 1, 2007, through December 31, 2010. The paper must contain
significant research contributions to the field of analysis of PDE,
as commonly defined in the mathematical literature, with direct or
potential applications.

The award will consist of a plaque and a certificate containing the
award citation. At least one of the awardees is expected to attend
the award ceremony and to present the paper as a plenary lecture at
the meeting. Travel expenses will be available to reimburse one
speaker.

Nominations should include a full bibliographic citation for the paper
and a brief statement outlining the justification for the nomination.
Nominations should be addressed to Professor Lawrence Craig Evans,
Chair, SIAG/APDE Prize Committee, and sent by May 15, 2011, to
J. M. Littleton at littleton@siam.org. Inquiries should be addressed

Scientific Software is a key component in developing effective

The focus of this workshop is on recent advances in algorithms and

computer scientists and computational scientists from different areas,

Sparse Days at CERFACS 2011. 6-7 September 2011.

We will indeed be holding our annual Sparse Days at CERFACS but there
are significant building works at CERFACS in May and June and so we
will hold this year's Sparse Days in September, the week after the
ParCo and Europar meetings.

So please Save the Date ... 6 and 7 September 2011. The format will
be similar to previous years. The main theme this year will be
"Sparse ExaScale" but I leave the interpretation of this up to you!

The 10th International Conference on Complexity in Acute Illness
(ICCAI, http://www.iccai.org), will take place from September
8th-11th, 2011 in Bonn, Germany. ICCAI once more aims to provide a
highly interdisciplinary forum focusing on bringing together critical
care physicians, anesthesiologists, mathematicians, bioengineers,
physicists, and computer scientists interested in improving acute care
outcomes through the application of advanced quantitative methodology
to clinical and experimental data. Details, including the detailed
scientific program and background information on Bonn and the Rhine
river valley as a travel destination, are available on the conference
website (http://www.iccai.org). Be sure to book early, space is limited!

There will be opportunities for both poster and oral presentations for
active participants. Accepted abstracts will be published in the
Journal of Critical Care. Contributions by trainees are highly
encouraged. Please note that purely methodological contributions with
potential relevance to critical illness related data analysis and
modeling are also welcome, thus providing an opportunity for
methods-oriented researchers to establish collaborations in new areas
of application. Topics of interest within scope for the NA community
include, but are not limited to, numerical approaches to inverse
problems, optimal control, timeseries analysis, and state-of-the-art
algorithms for differential equations of various flavors.

The formal registration and abstract submission features of the
website are currently being tweaked for improved usability and will
become available within the next couple of weeks. Abstract submission
deadline will be June 15th, with notification of acceptance by July
1st, and the early bird registration closing on July 7th. In the
meantime, interested parties can join our ICCAI mailing list to
receive updates on ICCAI 2011 developments.

Laboratory for Advanced Numerical Simulations (LANS)

The Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne
National Laboratory invites outstanding candidates to apply for a
postdoctoral position that involves the development of advanced
numerical techniques and scalable software for uncertainty
quantification and data analysis of complex, large-scale physical
models driven by partial differential equations.

Statistical analysis and modeling of massive data sets will be
required to accomplish this task by using scalable algorithms. The
appointee will have access to data obtained through direct
observations of processes and will conduct statistical model
calibration, validation, and simulation.

The position requires comprehensive expertise in a scientific
programming language (C, C++, Fortran) and in one or more of the
following: computational statistics, numerical algorithms and software
for differential equations, data assimilation, and stochastic
processes. Also required is considerable knowledge in one or more of
the following areas: statistics, numerical optimization, numerical
linear algebra, and parallel programming with MPI. Experience with
parallel computing and large-scale computational science is a plus.

has strong programs in scientific computing, software tools, and
computational mathematics. Argonne is located in the southwestern

A postdoctoral position is open with the Nanoscale and Reactive
Processes department at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. The salary is (US$)83,100/year. The postdoc will interface
with Sandia researchers and internal partners working with low
temperature plasma devices. Specific technical areas of interest
include vacuum arc discharge, plasma chemistry, surface chemistry, and
algorithm design and enhancement to manage large transient variations
in density and reactivity in a high performance computing
environment. The primary simulation tool is based on a kinetic plasma
description using Particle Cell (PIC) and Direct Simulation Monte
Carlo (DSMC) methodologies, although extensive excursions away from
basic methods are expected and encouraged. The postdoc will be
performing a combination of model development, code development,
testing, and application of new models. They will have access to world
leading computational resources.

Job requirements: A doctoral degree in Engineering, Physics, Science
or other technical discipline. Strong communication, organizational
and problem solving skills. The ability to work in a dynamic
environment. The ability to work in a team environment.

Desired skills: Background in computational plasma
modeling. Experience in one or more of the above technical
areas. Experience working in a massively parallel high performance
computing environment. Experience working within highly
multidisciplinary dynamic teams.

The ability to obtain a Department of Energy security clearance is
required for this position, which requires United States Citizenship.
