Subject: Verified Butcher's Tables

I would like to thank numerous people for very interesting and
informative discussions that followed the Runge-Kutta brain teaser
post in NA-Digest Volume 1, Issue 05 from January 31, 2011. The answer
to question #1 is "KiRK".

Numerous people asked me to post my findings about question #2. For
those and others, Butcher's tables for over 40 different explicit,
implicit, low-order, and high-order methods (including embedded) are
available in the FEMhub Online Lab. Due to a few discrepancies in the
literature, the correctness of each table was verified via a Python
script that accepts an arbitrary Butcher's table as input parameter
and generates log-log plots of the local and global truncation errors.

Here is how you can access the Butcher's tables and run the
verification script for yourself in a web browser (no installation of
any software is required):

(1) Go to the Online Lab web page http://lab.femhub.org.
(2) Create a free account (anti-spam measure) and log in.
(3) Double click on Browser, and click on "Fork" in the menu.
(4) A list of published worksheets appears. Select "Arbitrary RK
Method" which is at the end of the first section.
(5) Click "Fork".This will create a local copy in your account.
(6) Double-click on this worksheet in the Browser.
(7) Click "Evaluate all", and wait some time.
(8) Scroll down and look at the slopes in the log-log graphs.
These are the convergence orders for all methods.

The technological world of today has been witnessing the increased
complexity due to the rapid development of the process plants and the
manufacturing processes. The computational complexity, the reliability
problems and the restrictions in the communication make the ordinary
control strategy for such large-scale complex systems expensive,
difficult and insufficient.

The complexity arises in many fields in the form of the highly
nonlinearities, the large order of the describing dynamical systems,
the large number of subsystems which are interacting and even the
large number of input and outputs of the system. To cope with the
complexity several techniques have been proposed over the last few
decades and recently received a lot of attention again due to the ever
increasing complexity of physical and man-made systems. These
techniques find application in the variety of fields ranging from the
electrical power systems, the hydraulic systems to the heat transfer,
and the chemical processes. The focus of the course is on the methods
which automatically simplify the modeling and control of the complex
systems.

A PhD course on 'Efficient Modelling and Control of Complex Systems'
will be held on May 23-25, 2011, at Aalborg University, Denmark. In
particular , the main focus of the course is on the methods for:

Bioinformatics is the science of managing, mining, and extracting
knowledge from biological data. Since the last PBC workshop in 2009
the field has witnessed two growing paradigm shifts: improved third
generation sequencing technology and cloud computing. Because of the
flood of digital biological data in many more institutions,
application of diverse HPC techniques to solve bioinformatics problems
has become even more crucial to the success of the field.

The goal of this Workshop is to present the latest research in
high-performance computing applied to bioinformatics. We are

Operational Research (OR). LANCS is a collaboration between four of
the leading OR research groups in the UK (Lancaster, Cardiff and

a Russell Group University, the Schools of Management and Mathematics
are seeking to consolidate strength in Operational Research/Management
Science (OR/MS). Through the LANCS Initiative, three excellent
appointments have already been made at Lecturer level. Applications

A Post doctoral fellowship position is open for application in the
Faculty of Science in the Chemistry Department at the University of
Quebec in Montreal. The annual salary is 45,000 CAD$, which allows one

is initially for 1 year and may be prolonged up to 3 years provided
that sufficient progress is achieved.

The research project aims at studying corrosion processes using
SECM. Practical numerical simulation experience in electrochemistry
(preferably with Comsol Multiphysics) and strong theoretical
background in electrochemistry are essential employment
criteria. Practical laboratory experiences with microelectrochemical
experiments and scanning electrochemical microscopy are also desired
but not essential. The research will be performed in collaboration and
partly funded by General Motors of Canada. As such, the candidate is
expected to be able to manage time constraint projects and have good
communication skills. The knowledge of English is mandatory.

Requirements: Ph.D. in Applied Sciences. Although the work is highly
focused on simulations, a strong interest in experimental
electrochemistry is expected from the candidate.
