Subject: Leslie Fox Prize In NA - Deadline Approaching

The Fifteenth Leslie Fox Prize meeting will take place on Monday
June 27th 2011, in the Manchester Institute for Mathematical
Sciences at The University of Manchester.

Entries for the Fifteenth Leslie Fox Prize competition should be
submitted by January 31, 2011. Any person who is less than 31
years old on January 1st, 2011 and has not already won a first
prize is eligible. Each entry should consist of a paper,
describing some of the candidate's research, that is suitable for
a 40 minute lecture at a numerical analysis meeting.

The entries will be considered by an Adjudicating Committee
comprising Mark Ainsworth (Strathclyde), Nick Gould (Rutherford
Appleton Laboratory) and Nick Higham (Manchester, Chairman).

Subject: SIAM Student Paper Prize Submissions Due February 15

The SIAM STUDENT PAPER PRIZE is awarded every year to the student
author(s) of the most outstanding paper(s) submitted to the SIAM
Student Paper Competition. This award is based solely on the
merit and content of the student's contribution to the submitted
paper. The prize recognizes outstanding scholarship by students
in applied mathematics or scientific computing. Up to three
awards are given.

The 2011 SIAM Student Paper Prize will be awarded in 2011 and the
recipients will be recognized at the next SIAM Annual Meeting, to
be held in 2012. Each prize recipient will receive a framed
certificate plus a cash award of $1,000. Each will have the
opportunity to present his or her paper at the 2012 SIAM Annual
Meeting. Recipients will also receive $550 toward travel
expenses and gratis registration for AN12.

Eligibility is restricted to students in good standing who do not
yet hold the degree of PhD on the application deadline. Papers
entered in the competition must have already been submitted for
publication. Submissions may be based on co-authored papers.

The aim of this conference is to attract leading researchers,
both practitioners and academics, to discuss new and relevant
numerical methods for the solution of practical computational
problems in finance. Discussion of new products and new models
requiring new numerical methods for their solution is also
welcome. The conferences are focused on topics of current
interest, and the programme is organised around the talks given
by distinguished invited speakers. Individual contributions may
be submitted to either an oral or a poster session. Participants
are encouraged to propose minisymposia consisting of a number of
papers on a given topic. Offers to organise panel discussions are
also welcome. The main focus of the NMF 2011 conference will be
on the computational challenges facing the modern developments in
quantitative finance. Topics in all areas of numerical finance
are welcome, such as but not exclusively the following: valuation
and risk management of exotic derivatives (path- dependency
and/or early exercise features); integral transform methods, in
particular Fourier and FFT; simulation methods; lattice methods;
partial differential equation methods; algorithmic and
statistical arbitrage trading models; financial econometric
methods; and inverse problems. We have further identified two
special themes of particular relevance given the current
landscape of financial markets.

Inverse problems have emerged as an increasingly important
paradigm in computational engineering science (CES). In contrast
to classical problems in CES, the focus is on finding the cause
for a given effect. Inverse problems are often ill-conditioned,
and thus present an enormous challenge for theoretical insight
and the development of suitable methods.

The Aachen Conference on Computational Engineering
Science (AC.CES) will bring together leading experts in theory,
method development, and applications related to inverse problems
in computational engineering. The main objectives of the
conference are to present cutting-edge research and to facilitate
interdisciplinary collaboration.

Participants are encouraged to present posters at the
conference. A one-page abstract related to the topics of the
conference should be submitted via the conference website by

The International Association for Boundary Element
Methods (IABEM) promotes and facilitates the international
exchange of technical information on the development of boundary
integral equation formulations and numerical solution techniques,
commonly referred to as Boundary Element Methods (BEM), and their
applications to problems in nature, technology, engineering, and
science. The Association organizes a biennial international
symposium for more than 20 years. The last five symposia were
held in Paris (1998), Brescia (2000), Austin (2002),
Minneapolis (2004) and Graz (2006). Following the success of
previous meetings, a four-day symposium named IABEM2011 is being
organized at the University of Brescia, Italy on September 5-8,

enclosing property, Bernstein polynomials have become a useful
tool in many fields, such as robust control, automatic theorem
proving, global optimization, and computer aided geometric
design. Other fields where Bernstein polynomials have recently
been applied include image processing, pattern recognition, and
ordinary differential equations, with potential for verified
computations as well. We feel that these developments have
matured sufficiently such that the time has come for a special
issue devoted to this approach and invite submission of papers to

Optimization methods for inverse problems in imaging

The inverse problems arising in imaging, due to their
ill-posedness, are often formulated as optimization problems with
a regularization term which mitigates the effect of the
ill-posedness and which leads to high quality image
reconstructions. In recent years, a growing interaction between
imaging and optimization has given rise to significant advances
in both the areas. Optimization-based tools have been developed
to solve challenging imaging problems, while the experience with
imaging problems has led to an improved and deeper understanding
of certain optimization algorithms. The special issue aims to
strengthen this interaction and to stimulate new advances in
numerical optimization and regularization theory for inverse
problems and image processing. Contributions to first and
second-order methods, dual or primal-dual approaches, and
Bregman-type schemes will be considered. Applications related to
microscopy, medical imaging, and astronomical imaging are
appealing topics for the special issue. Papers connected with the
use of multiprocessor systems in the design of innovative
optimization algorithms for imaging problems are also welcome.

algorithms for future exascale systems. Specific research topics
are mesh partitioning and load balancing, linear algebra,

The newly established ExaScience Lab is a research partnership
between Intel, five Belgian (Flemish) universities and the imec
research institute, and brings together researchers in physics,
numerics and parallel programming, architectural simulation and
modeling, and visualization. The Lab's mission is to design and
develop algorithms, tools and software methods for future
exascale computing targeted towards space weather modeling and
other scientific applications, and to design and develop
architectural simulation and modeling techniques for projecting
performance, power and reliability estimates of future exascale
systems. ExaScience Lab is part of Intel Labs Europe.

The researchers will have access to a stimulating research
environment in the ExaScience Lab in Leuven. There will be a
close collaboration with other Intel labs in Europe and the US.

The candidate is expected to have a demonstrated track record of

bed flow simulation beginning May 1, 2006 (or earlier). The
positions will be held within the "Fluidized Bed Catalytic
Gasification of Low- Grade Coals and Petroleum Coke" project,
which is funded through the Carbon Management Canada (CMC)
Network of Centres of Excellence. The salary is C$40,000 plus

The successful candidates will have opportunities for
collaboration with project researchers at the Universities of
Calgary, Alberta, and Toronto and with our industrial partners.
No teaching is required for this position, although limited
teaching duties may be arranged (with stipend) if desired.

This position is for one year with expected renewal for an
