Subject: 2010 Babuska Prize Awarded

In December 2010, the Czech Association for Mechanics and the
Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists again awarded the
I. Babuska Prize for the best work in scientific computing
submitted by students and young scientists. The Prize winner for
2010 is Dr Bedrich Sousedik from the Faculty of Civil Engineering
of the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) and the
University of Colorado in Denver. The work honored is his PhD
thesis Comparison of some domain decomposition methods.

Further winners were delivered diplomas of honor. The second
position was shared by Dr Alexandros Markopoulos from the Faculty
of Mechanical Engineering of the VSB-Technical University of
Ostrava for his PhD thesis Scalable methods of domain
decomposition for solving static problems of mechanics and Dr
Miloslav Vlasak from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of
Charles Univerity in Prague who submitted his PhD thesis
Numerical solution of convection-diffusion problems by
discontinuous Galerkin method. The third position was awarded to
Dr Jan Sykora from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the CTU
who presented his PhD thesis Multi-scale modeling of transport
processes in masonry structures.

Further diplomas of honor were delivered to MS theses. The first
position in this category was taken by J. Kopacka from the
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the CTU. The second position
was shared by M. Hadrava and A. Kosik (both from the Faculty of
Mathematics and Physics of Charles Univerity in Prague). The
third position was awarded to L. Mraz (Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering of the CTU).

The Prize was established in 1994 by Ivo Babuska.

The linear sampling method is the oldest and most developed of
the qualitative methods in inverse scattering theory. It is based
on solving a linear integral equation and then using the

electromagnetic scattering problems. It presents uniqueness
theorems and the derivation of various inequalities on the

Scope:
The mission of our RBF conference is to educate and motivate
researchers (at all levels) and students in RBF methods, and to
stimulate and inspire research in this field. The conference will
feature ten talks by two leading researchers in this field, Bengt
Fornberg at the Applied Mathematics Department of the University
of Colorado at Boulder and Natasha Flyer at the Institute for
Mathematics Applied to Geosciences of National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

The talks will be designed to appeal to both experts and novices,
and to stimulate discussion and collaboration between the
speakers and attendees about recent advances and open problems in
RBF. This conference will provide an environment to communicate
the latest research and development of RBF methods in recent
years, and will attract a wider and more diverse group of
researchers to undertake research in RBF methods and build a
supportive community of RBF researchers.

The Centre for Mathematical Medicine (CMM), hosted at the Fields
Institute, invites applications from candidates for two
Fields-CMM postdoctoral fellowships of a duration of one year to
commence July 1, 2011 (or on a negotiable date thereafter).

Candidates should have strong interest in current
interdisciplinary activity at the Centre. While positions are
open to all areas of mathematical medicine and biology,
preference will be given to those individuals whose research is
concerned with the current principal areas of CMM focus:
mathematical oncology, computational neuroscience,
bioinformatics, or biomechanics of soft tissues. In particular,
we are looking for individuals interested in collaborative
interaction with clinicians and experimentalists.

The fellowships provide for a period of engagement in research
and participation in the Centre's activities. They award a
stipend of $20,000 and are offered in conjunction with a Fields
Affiliate or Principal Sponsoring University. The partner
institution matches Fields' support, and fellows may also
teach (at most) one university course per semester for an
additional stipend. On the cover sheet of your application,
please list any faculty members at these partner institutions who

A postdoctoral position in numerical optimization and data
assimilation (duration of 18 months) is open in the joint
laboratory between CERFACS (Parallel Algorithms Team) and
IRIT (Parallel Algorithms and Optimization team).

We are looking for a bright, motivated person with a good
research record and the ability to join existing projects in
numerical optimization with a good initiative in pursuing new
research directions. A PhD in applied mathematics with a strong
interest in numerical optimization and data assimilation is
required.

The ADTAO project involves several partners in Toulouse who are
internationally recognized experts in environmental modelling,
data assimilation and applied mathematics. The partners share a
common objective: to design the next generation of operational
data assimilation systems for large, multi-scale and highly
nonlinear dynamical systems. The project focuses on the
development of an efficient algorithm for solving noisy large
scale nonlinear least-squares problems with up to 100 million of
variables.

Using variational methods, scientific computation and numerical
optimization, the successful candidate will develop new
techniques for the assimilation of data into stochastic dynamical
systems and propose numerical algorithms that are both globally
convergent and amenable to modern parallel architectures.

A particular strength of the project is its access to real-life
applications arising in meteorology or in oceanography through
strong and well developed academic/industrial collaborations
within a very active research program in applied mathematics and
advanced scientific computing.

A highly competitive salary, mobility and travel allowances will
be offered. Criteria for selection include demonstrated research
ability in applied mathematical sciences, strength in verbal and
written communication.

Post Doctoral Fellow in Parallel Scalable Algorithms and Software

This position is part of a research program to extend the Uintah
software (www.uintah.utah.edu) as applied to challenging problems
in combustion and energy to petascale and beyond using novel
algorithmic and software approaches. Uintah is a scalable,
highly parallel framework designed to simulate complex
fluid-structure interaction problems, with a clear partition
between the parallel framework and the numerical algorithms.

The postdoc will be expected to perform algorithmic and parallel
computing research to help Uintah scale to beyond 98K cores. The
work is projected to last for three years and will involve
research, analysis, and continuing development of scalable
adaptive algorithms in the areas such as adaptive meshing and
linear solvers in the context of combustion and energy-related
problems combined with implementation and scaling studies using
the Uintah code base.

The requirement is for an individual with highly developed
algorithmic and C++ programming skills who must have experience
in developing parallel algorithms and software. Familiarity with
adaptive grid and/or linear solver techniques is desirable.
