Subject: Robert (Bob) Funderlic died on September 5, 2009

It is with much sadness and a feeling of great loss that I report that
Dr. Robert E. Funderlic, former Department Head in the Computer
Science Department at N.C. State University, a colleague, and a friend
died on September 5, 2009 after a long and brave fight with cancer.

Bob received his BS in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame
in 1959. In 1970 he received his PhD in Mathematics and Numerical
Analysis from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) under the
direction of Alston Householder. Prior to joining NC State University,
Dr. Funderlic worked for the US Department of Energy Oak Ridge
facilities, including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Bob Funderlic was a leader, a visionary, an award winning educator,
and an internationally recognized numerical analyst. He provided
critical leadership during the formative years of the the Computer
Science Department at NC State University. He will be missed very
much.

Subject: DOTcvpSB, Matlab for dynamic optimization in systems biology

We are pleased to announce DOTcvpSB, a Matlab toolbox
for advanced optimization in systems biology.

Software and documentation available at:
http://www.iim.csic.es/~dotcvpsb/

DOTcvpSB facilitates the statement and solution of
dyamic optimization (optimal control) problems related
with biological systems, modelled with ODEs (although
arbitrary black-box models can be handled as well).
The toolbox can import SBML models for the dynamics via
the SBMLtoolbox.

Examples of problems provided with the toolbox:
- optimal drug infusion to a patient
- minimization of intracellular oscillations
- bioreactor optimization

DOTcvpSB is described in the following paper:

Subject: NLP++ Toolbox, C++ class library for nonlinear program

We are pleased to announce the release of the NLP++ Toolbox, a comprehensive
C++ class library providing optimization routines for a large variety of
nonlinear, constrained optimization problems.

CONSTRAINED NONLINEAR OPTIMIZATION
Nonlinear constrained optimization problems can be solved by the C/C++
implementation of the frequently used sequential quadratic programming
(SQP) algorithm NLPQLP of Prof. Dr. Klaus Schittkowski. Its FORTRAN
counter-part is frequently used in industrial applications since many
years and designed for solving small to medium scale problems.

LARGE SCALE NONLINEAR OPTIMIZATION
For solving optimization problems with very many variables, the sequential
convex programming (SCP) algorithm SCPIP of PD Dr. Christian Zillober can
be applied, also known under the name method of moving asymptotes (MMA).
The code is frequently used in industrial applications, especially in
mechanical engineering.

GRADIENT FREE OPTIMIZATION
A gradient-free constrained optimization method based on successive linear
approximation (COBYLA) allows the solution of unstructured problems by linear
interpolation.

CONSTRAINED MIXED-INTEGER OPTIMIZATION
A variety of methods is offered for solving nonlinear and non-convex
constrained mixed-integer optimization problems. Among them are adapted
sequential quadratic programming, outer approximation, branch-and-bound, and
stochastic search algorithms. Also binary and catalogue variables are handled.

MULTICRITERIA OPTIMIZATION
Eight algorithms are available for solving optimization with more than one
objective function by finding an appropriate compromise and by transforming
the different alternatives into scalar problems, to be solved then by any of
the scalar optimizers (SQP, SCPIP, or COBYLA)
