Subject: Request for examples of larger parametric systems of linear equations

In cooperation with Professor E. Popova from the Bulgarian Academy of
Sciences in Sofia we have developed a software package for computing a tight
enclosure of the solution set of a system of linear equations, where the
coefficients of the matrix and the right-hand side are polynomial or
rational functions of parameters varying in given intervals. We have already
tried some examples from the application of the finite element method but we
would appreciate receiving examples of larger parametric systems stemming
from other applications like circuit design and biology. References to such
systems would also be welcome.

Objectives: This school aims at presenting recent developments
concerning methods and algorithms for solving large algebraic systems
on modern high performance computing systems. The program of the
school is organized around the following topics:

- Iterative methods and preconditioning techniques
- Direct and hybrid iterative/direct solvers
- Domain decomposition methods
- Multigrid methods
- Methods for eigenvalues/eigenvectors computation

Emphasis will be put on aspects related to the adaptation of methods
and algorithms modern high performance computing systems. Moreover,

parallel numerical computing and basic techniques of numerical linear
algebra.

The fourth FEniCS workshop will be held on June 11-12 2009 at Simula
Research Laboratory in Oslo, Norway.

FEniCS is a collaborative effort towards the development of free
software for automated solution of differential equations. Since its
inception in 2003, the FEniCS project has come a long way and many of
our software components are now starting to mature. As a result,
FEniCS is now becoming more accessible and useful to a wider
audience. As an example, we are approaching the release of version 1.0
of DOLFIN, the finite element problem solving environment developed as
part of FEniCS, the release of which will mark an important milestone
for FEniCS.

This workshop will be an opportunity to hear about these recent
developments and to discuss and map out future directions.

The sixth in this series of UK conferences, focusing on application of ideas
from approximation theory for developing practical algorithms, will take
place from August 31 to September 4th 2009, in Ambleside in the Lake
District.

This conference will have the theme of Complexity, in particular Tropical
Mathematics, Approximation Theory, Non-Linear and Non-Smooth Dynamics, Model
Reduction, and Wild Complexity, where statistics and model reduction do not
work so well. We will be fostering linkage between these emerging areas, and
classical approximation theory, such as orthogonal polynomials, splines,
wavelets, and radial basis functions.

There will be five keynote talks given by leaders in different directions in
complexity, including

The Computational Mathematics Group in the Computer Science and Mathematics
division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is looking for Postdoctoral staff to
work on developing new hybrid numerical methods that will provide a
self-consistent, seamless multidomain description for multiphysics problems.
We will be exploring an accurate and robust continuous/discontinuous Galerkin
method, and apply this new method to computational fluid dynamics problems.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate is expected to have completed their Ph.D. studies in
Applied Math, Computational Science, or a related field. The person should
have a strong background in numerical analysis, PDE solvers, finite elements
and/or finite volumes, and scientific computing. A background in
PDE-constrained optimization and continuum mechanics is desirable. Experience
in large-scale parallel code development in C or C++ and the willingness to
work in a team environment is essential. Applicants cannot have received the
most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and
must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
