Subject: Michael Golomb

Michael Golomb (1909-2008) died April 9, 2008, after a brief
illness. An analyst, he made many contributions to applied
mathematics and numerical analysis (for example, in his Ph.D. thesis
he defined monotone operators, and he worked in spline approximation,
initially with Hans Weinberger).

Michael was awarded the Ph.D. in Berlin in 1933, but immediately had
to leave Germany because of anti-Jewish laws and sentiment. He was
honored by the City of Berlin in 1998 at the time of the

Subject: PLTMG 10.0 released

PLTMG 10.0 is a package for solving elliptic partial differential
equations in general regions of the plane. It is based on continuous
piecewise polynomial triangular finite elements (linear, quadratic
or cubic), and features adaptive local mesh refinement, multigraph
iteration, and pseudo-arclength continuation options for parameter
dependencies. It also provides options for solving several classes
of optimal control and obstacle problems. The package includes an
initial mesh generator and several graphics packages. Support for
the Bank-Holst parallel adaptive meshing strategy is also provided.

PLTMG is provided as Fortran (and a little C) source code, in
both single and double precision versions. The code has interfaces
to X-Windows, MPI, and Michael Holst's OpenGL image viewer SG. The
X-Windows, MPI, and SG interfaces require libraries that are NOT
provided as part of the PLTMG package. PLTMG is available from
Netlib, MgNet, and the author's homepage.

Subject: Sdm.net: Splines for Data Mining under dot.net

I want to announce the Sdm.net: Spline library under dot.net. It
continues my investigations in splines represented few years ago with
JSpline+ library. For more details, look in my personal site at

The Sdm.net library is intended for solving some Data Mining tasks
using polynomial regression and a rich collection of univariate and
multivariate splines.

The library contains 15 solvers of System of Linear Algebraic
Equations (SLAE) for real banded, square, and rectangular matrices. It
allows to solve Least Squares with linear constraints; it also
calculates the null space of matrix and constructs the normal
pseudo-solution if the matrix of SLAE has non-full rank.

The Data Mining classes allow user to calculate statistics of
variables, to reduce the number of variable basing on correlation
between them, to find neighbour nodes of mesh, to thin the
measurements by removing near neighbors and outliers. The rich
collection of affine transformations of variables is introduced.

The univariate polynomial splines of any degree can be constructed by
function values in mesh nodes (odd-degree splines) or by mean
integrals in mesh cells (even-degree splines). The interpolation,
smoothing, and selection of smoothing parameter from the residual
criterion are allowed. Weighted smoothing is also supported. The
averaging is also allowed for even-degree polynomial splines. The
polynomial and B-spline representation of solution is provided.

Subject: History of component-wise implementation of nonlinear one-step methods

I reviewer of one of my recent papers tell me that he don't know how to
implement component-wise a nonlinear one-step method for systems of ordinary
differential equations. The oldest reference I know for this subject is page
218 of Lambert's book, "Computational Methods in Ordinary Differential
Equations," Wiley, 1973. I believe there must be oldest references.

Do somebody could help me? Thanks in advance.

This Symposium showcases the achievements of the ongoing EU-funded DEISA
project. Talks will cover the major scientific projects that have run on
this pan-European HPC infrastructure, and the technologies that have
been used in its creation. Invited speakers include Thomas Eickermann of
the PRACE project; Ed Seidel, Director of the Center For Computation and
Technology; and prominent DEISA users and staff.

The DEISA, Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing
Applications, Grid of supercomputers is unique within Europe. DEISA is a
structured layer on top of the national supercomputing services which
are tightly coupled by a dedicated network and supported by innovative
system and grid software. Users can now run simulations which, without
DEISA, would not have been feasible.

The DEISA Symposium will take part over two days. The first day will
feature talks from key players in the field of HPC e-Infrastructures
including DEISA, and also from PRACE. The second day will see talks
from prominent DEISA users, reporting on both their experience of the
DEISA infrastructure and on their ground-breaking results.

The purpose of the Symposium is to provide a forum where attendees can
discuss HPC Grids and where DEISA users can share their experiences and
results. The target audience is both the support teams, providing and
supporting grid-enabled HPC-facilities, and scientists from academia,
industry and commerce, with an interest in so-called Extreme Computing.

The European Mathematical Society (EMS) in collaboration with Scuola
Matematica Interuniversitaria (SMI) of Florence, Italy, organises a
summer school in Cortona, Italy. The school aims at addressing in a
unified framework several aspects of the mathematical modelling and
numerical simulation of the circulatory physiology. In particular we
will address the electrical excitation of the heart, the related
mechanical contraction, models for blood flow circulation and the
transport of biochemicals.

Emphasis will be put on modelling aspects, the analysis of coupled
system of PDEs, numerical approximation and algorithmic issues. In
particular, we will address efficient methods for the incompressible
Navier-Stokes equations, Arbitrary Eulerian Lagrangian formulation,
numerical techniques for the dynamics of biological structures, coupling
strategies for fluid structure interaction schemes, numerical schemes
for the non linear reaction diffusion system governing the cardiac
bio-electrical activity and domain decomposition techniques for their
parallel implementation.

Beside traditional lectures, the school includes practical sessions,
organised with the aid of scientific software.

The course is addressed to researchers and graduate students in applied
mathematics, as well as bioengineers and medical researchers interested
in the numerical simulation aspects.

A limited number of scholarships are available. Scholarships cover
accommodation, living expenses and part of travel expenses according to
budget availability. Applications deadline is May 30th 2008. Preference
will be given to nationals of EU and associated states, yet applications
from motivated students of other nationalities will be considered as

The Statistics group participates in a broad range of projects that extend
across the Laboratory. The group provides both statistical analysis and
methodology development. Primary areas of emphasis are in design of
experiments, statistical data analysis, statistical quality control,
probabilistic modeling and computer simulation, spatial data analysis,
chemometrics and regression, reliability and maintainability analysis,
margin and uncertainty analysis, and metrology.

A MS/PhD in the field of Statistics or in related fields such as Industrial
Engineering or Operations Research, with a strong emphasis in statistics
coursework is required. Ability to work independently with customers
requiring statistical support is also required. Engineering science
background or experience is desirable. Experience in applying Bayesian
techniques is also desirable.

Title of Research Project: Domain decomposition for full wave simulation
of cold plasma.

Description of Research:
Waves at a frequency close to the lower hybrid (LH) resonance are
widely used in tokamaks for current drive. Modelling of LH waves is
usually carried out using Ray-tracing code for computing the LH waves
propagation and absorption. First “full wave” simulations based on
spectral techniques have shown different results in comparison to RT
model and inconistencies still remain. The aim of this post doctoral
fellowship is to develop a domain decomposition method for the
full-wave simulation of electromagnetic wave propagation in
plasma. This work is a collaboration between the INRIA team CALVI and
the CEA Cadarache(ITER project). The full-wave method allows us to
study the electromagnetic wave propagation in cold plasma and
the"whistler" modes for a frequency near the lower-hybrid frequency.
In the full wave simulation of wave propagation consider in this
project we study a time harmonic formulation. In this formulation we
solve the governing equation for the electric field. The domain
considered is as near as possible of the cavity fill by a tokomak
plasma. Toroidal coordinates are introduced. In our approach we
consider Fourier decomposition in the angular coordinate to obtain
stationary Maxwell equations in a cross-section of the tokamak cavity.
To consider finite element numerical method widely used to approximate
the solution of this type of problems we introduce a mixed augmented
variational (weak) formulation taking account the divergence
constraint and natural boundary conditions (Costabel, Ciarlet Jr.,
Assous, Degond et al.). An evolution of this method due to Costabel
and al. allows us to consider the anisotropic case. A code was
developed in the total domain case following these ideas in the team
CALVI The analysis of the weak formulation of our problem with a
heterogeneous behaviour of the conductivity tensor presents some
difficulties. We propose a domain decomposition to overcome this
anisotropy. The next objective is to develop the domain decomposition
code, when we consider the mixed augmented formulation on each sub
domains. It's a non trivial work to identify the interface condition
between sub domains. The postdoctoral fellow will first study
interface conditions, a beginnig point for this research will be the
papers of Alonso and Valli, Quarteroni and Valli, Collino, Ghanemi and
Joly. The domain decomposition must answer to two priorities. The
first one is to take account of the anisotropy of the problem because
of the magnetic field, with stiff behaviour of densities and
gradients. We want to be able to adapt finite element discretization
in each sub domains. The second priority is to adapt the algorithm
and the code to parallel computers. In that case we will be able to
consider fine discretization and compare the results to ray-tracing
ones.

Desired profile of candidate:

Ph. D. in Mathematics, Numerical analysis speciality, with good
experience in numerical resolution of PDE's, scientific computation,
and possible knowledge in domain decomposition or Ph.D in Physics,
possibly a specialization in Plasma Physics with a good knowledge of
scientific computation.
