Subject: New tool for interfacing C/C++ to MATLAB and Octave

I am pleased to announce the release of MWrap, a tool in the spirit of SWIG
for generating MATLAB and Octave interfaces to C/C++ code. MWrap input files
consist of ordinary MATLAB code augmented with lines that describe C/C++
function and method calls. From these, MWrap produces a MEX file to handle the
calls and MATLAB scripts to call the MEX file. The source and manual are

The iWAPT2007 is the second of a series of international workshops
that focuses on automatic tuning technology. The goal of this
workshop is to provide opportunities for researchers and
practitioners in all fields related to automatic performance tuning
to exchange ideas and experiences. Papers reporting original ideas
and results are solicited. Invited talks by leading researchers are
also planned.

PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION PLAN
Extended abstracts (10pt, single-column, a maximum of 3,000 words) on
a wide range of automatic performance tuning topics (as listed above)
are welcome. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits
including correctness, originality, technical accuracy, quality of
presentation, and relevance to the workshop. Authors should submit
the extended abstract electronically (PDF or PS) to
iWAPT2007-sub@kata-lab.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp. We are currently planning
the publication of after-conference proceedings from some major
publisher through a second review process after the workshop.

Sciences in Taiwan is hosting an international workshop on

Subject: European Postgraduate Fluid Dynamics Conference, Aug 2007

We are hosting the inaugural European Postgraduate Fluid Dynamics
Conference 2007 (EPFDC2007), at the University of Birmingham, on the
8-10th of August.

The EPFDC 2007 is a conference organised by, and aimed specifically
at, postgraduate researchers in the field of fluid dynamics. The
principal aim of the conference is to provide a forum in which
postgraduate students in fluid dynamics can present and discuss their
research with a group of their peers.

The conference will also include three invited keynote speakers,
Professor Griebel (Bonn), Professor Chapman (Keele) and Dr Heil
(Manchester) who will give review lectures on, respectively, Numerical
Methods in Fluid Dynamics, High Speed Flows and Biological Fluid
Dynamics.

The layout of the conference will provide an opportunity for student
to 'get to know' other students through 'networking' time and social
events.

Winter School on Computational Science
The University of Texas at El Paso
January 7 - 11, 2008

The Winter School on Computational Science (WSCS 2008), organized jointly
by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Sandia National Lab (SNL),
and Los Alamos National Lab (LANL), will be devoted to the latest developments,
current research projects, and new trends in numerical methods for partial
differential equations. The school will consist of several short courses
(approx. 18 lectures) that will provide a concise, and yet systematic
introduction to key aspects of computational modeling, such as

* meshing,
* discretizations,
* error control and adaptivity,
* solvers,
* advanced applications.

Theoretical lectures will take place in morning sessions, and will be
complemented by practical afternoon sessions devoted to hands-on training
with scientific computing software and problem solving. Participants will
have an opportunity to present posters and submit papers to WSCS 2008
proceedings. UTEP will give formal credit to participating students.
Lecture notes of WSCS 2008 will be published by Springer. Social program
will include a welcome reception and field trip to White Sands National
Monument. Early registration deadline is October 15, 2007. NSF support
for travel and accommodation of graduate and Ph.D. students is pending.

Second call for papers

In collaboration with the numerical analysis groups of the Universities
of Trieste and Udine, the Department of Mathematics of the University
of Innsbruck organizes the fourth workshop in series on numerical analysis
and scientific computing. This year, the workshop is devoted to the time
integration of evolution problems placing emphasis on the time discretisation
of PDEs. Our intention is to provide a platform for exchanging new ideas and
results in the development of numerical methods for evolution equations.
We try to cover both, theoretical and practical aspects, and we want to
bring together numerical analysts working in the field as well as PhD
students who want to start in this area.

Delay differential equations arise in many applications, and in the case of
constant delays solutions give rise to semi-flows on function spaces, and a
fairly mature theory of such problems as infinite dimensional dynamical
systems has now been developed. However, models in physical and biological
applications are increasingly encompassing features which do not fit this
theory, often having non-constant and state-dependent delays. Mixed type
differential equations with both advanced and retarded arguments also arise,
for example as the defining equations for travelling waves in nonlinear
lattices. Volterra functional (integral and integro-differential) equations
with variable and state-dependent delays, including equations of
“integral-algebraic” type, are also used with increasing frequency. The theory
of such problems is still not complete, though significant progress
has been made in recent years. Large gaps also exist in the numerical analysis
and computational solution of such functional equations.

This workshop will provide a wide perspective on current research and open
problems, including theory, applications and numerical analysis of these
equations. Recent advances across the field of DDEs will be covered, with
particular concentrations in non-constant and state-dependent delay equations,
advance-delay differential equations and Volterra functional equations,
including problems with “differential-algebraic” structure. The workshop will
bring together specialists in analysis and numerical computations of the
functional and delay equations, with particular applications in biological
problems and traveling waves in nonlinear lattices.

Subject: Postdoc position in computational electromagnetics

Applications are invited for a 18 month post-doctoral position at
INRIA Sophia Antipolis to carry out theoretical and computational
research in the framework of the development of a high-order,
parallel, discontinuous Galerkin particle-in-cell solver on
unstructured tetrahedral meshes for the simulation of the transport of
charged particles in 3D.

Applicants should have (or hope to have soon) a PhD in applied
mathematics or scientific computing and have experience with study and
solution of partial differential equations. A qualification in
computational electromagnetics is desirable, a first experience in the
study of the coupled Vlasov/Maxwell equations will be an asset. A
good programming experience (Fortran) is required, as is the ability
to manipulate computer codes in a Linux/Unix environment.

Subject: 3-year postdoc at Oxford on algorithms for constrained optimization

A three-year postdoctoral position is available to work on algorithms
for large-scale constrained optimization with Nick Gould and others in
the Oxford Numerical Analysis Group, and in collaboration with Philippe
Toint (Namur) and Sven Leyffer (Argonne).

The aim of the project is to revisit the SQP approach, particularly, but
not exclusively, to derive new convergence strategies and to investigate
better ways of dealing with equality constraints. The plan is to
consider three approaches: (i) an SQP method in which extra constraints
are imposed on the sub-problem to ensure that the step gives local
improvement, (ii) a regularized SLP-EQP method in which the choice of
which constraints are imposed when finding the step is delegated to a
subsidiary but simpler problem and (iii) an approach where reduction of
the constraint violation and objective function are controlled
separately without using a nonlinear programming ``filter''. The aim
will be, in each case, to design and analyse suitable algorithms, and to
produce high-quality, publicly available software as part of the GALAHAD
optimization library. The post is available from 1st September 2007.

PhD Position on numerical analysis and scientific computing of integral-
and partial differential equations with Prof. Dr. Stefan A. Funken,
Institute of Numerical Analysis, University of Ulm.

The subject of the PhD thesis covers the fields of scientific computing,
numerical analysis and engineering. The tasks include the creation of 3D
models, the development, analysis and implementation of approximation
methods (FEM, FVM, BEM) for elliptic and parabolic PDEs, and the
interpretation and visualization of the computed results.

Teaching at undergraduate and graduate student levels will be a mandatory
duty.

The applicant must have a degree in mathematics or related disciplines
(e.g. computer science or physics), a strong background in applied or
numerical analysis, programming skills and sufficient knowledge of German
(working language).

It is initially limited to two years, with the possibility of an
extension.
The salary is E13 which is the equivalent to the former BAT IIA/2.
