Subject: Corrected translation of a Germanic numerical treatise (funny)

As we look ahead to the Christmas season, is fitting to reflect on the proper
translation of the German word "tannenbaum." The prefix "tanne" is related to
the French "tenir," or "to hold," which is not surprising, given that the Franks
are a Latinized tribe of western Germanic origin. Thus "tanne n" becomes "hold
n", referring to the fact that a sparse matrix of dimension n typically holds
O(n) nonzero entries. "Baum" of course is "tree" in English.

Thus, the German "tannenbaum" becomes "sparse elimination tree" in English, or
"sparse etree" for short (i.e., the MATLAB function of that name). It is
fitting that this term, used so frequently in sparse matrix computations, was
coined by an illustrious researcher of Germanic descent (Rob Schreiber).

Other words in "O Tannenbaum" include the following.

In Germanic tradition, "Blätter" or small subtrees, are used to decorate a house
during Christmas celebrations (by Germanic householders, to be precise). They
are also essential to sparse matrix factorization; the nonzero pattern of the
kth row of L is given by a pruned subtree rooted at node k, for example. The
elimination tree, or etree for short, can be found in time nearly proportional
to nnz(A). Many algorithms are governed by paths in the etree, from leaves
towards the root.

"Sommerzeit" means summer time, when time (zeit) passes quickly (thus linearly).

"gefallen" refers to the fill-in that occurs in G.E. (Gaussian Elimination), a
termed first used by another illustrious German, Gauss himself. Gauss did not
use the term "LU" factorization, refering to the left and right factors as
"Trost" and "Kraft" instead, since Gauss placed great trust in his craft.

"lehren" refers to "rule(s)" or "methods".

With this linguistic and numerical background, a corrected translation of "O
Tannenbaum" is given below.

The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to an individual for outstanding

awarded for a single notable achievement or for a collection of such

The special issue of Parallel Computing is planned in the area of
Parallel Matrix Algorithms and Applications and devoted to various
novel, efficient linear algebraic techniques and their applications in
diverse areas of science and industry. The issue is to follow the
PMAA'06 workshop, which was held at IRISA in Rennes, France, Sept,
6-9, 2006 (http://pmaa06.irisa.fr). However, the papers solicited in
this call for papers are not restricted to the contributions presented
during the Workshop.

Topics to be covered by the issue include, but are not limited to:
* Methods for solving large linear systems of equations: direct,
iterative, domain decomposition.
* Parallel eigenvalue and singular value computations.
* Parallel matrix multiplication.
* Parallel environments and tools for enabling matrix applications.
* Large scale applications from diverse fields which have an
emphasis on parallel matrix computation.
* Performance modeling.

The participants in the PMAA'06 Workshop are particularly strongly

accomplishments in both research and teaching. Areas of interest
include all aspects of mathematical biology (bioengineering,
biofluids, computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics,

NUMERICAL METHODS AND MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF NONLINEAR WAVES

A PhD grant is available at Department of Mathematical Sciences at
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The PhD
candidate will be based either at NTNU or at the University of
Bergen. The grant, which is for three years, is funded by the Research
Council of Norway. At NTNU the grant period may be extended to four
years in exchange for teaching duties.

The PhD project focuses on mathematical models for nonlinear
waves. Depending on the background of the successful applicant, the
focus will be on either of mathematical analysis, numerical analysis,
or numerical simulation of partial differential equations for
nonlinear wave phenomena. The PhD candidate will participate in the
activities of the WaveMaker project which has partners from the
University of Oslo, the University of Bergen, and NTNU.
