Subject: A Historical Question

1) In the early 70's letters from IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in
Yorktown Heights had in the letter head

2^19937 - 1 is a prime !

2) Some years later letters from the University of Illinois at Champaign-
Urbana had in their postage stamp

Four colors suffice !

Question: Does anybody has an original of one of these? I would like to use a
Xerox/photo of the original in some survey paper. Does anybody know of similar
other ads (and could provide a photo of some original)?

Thanks a lot

Subject: UMFPACK v4.1 and AMD v1.0

I would like to announce the availability of UMFPACK v4.1, a package for
sparse LU factorization. It includes an interface to AMD v1.0. It is much
faster than v4.0 (which appears as x=A\b in MATLAB 6.5), particularly for
unsymmetric matrices with symmetric nonzero pattern. It is written in C,
and includes a MATLAB and Fortran interface. It can handle real or
complex matrices.

AMD v1.0 is also available as a stand-alone package, for ordering sparse
matrices prior to Cholesky factorization (or LU factorization with diagonal
pivoting). It has versions in both C and Fortran, with a MATLAB interface.
In MATLAB, p = amd (A) is much faster than p = symamd (A). AMD is co-authored
with Patrick Amestoy and Iain Duff.

Subject: JMP, Sparse Matrix Library for Java

JMP is a freely available sparse matrix library for Java. It features
different sparse formats (dynamic and static), thread-safe matrix
assembly, and multi-threaded matrix/vector operations. Operating on these
matrices is a suite of Krylov methods and preconditioners (from the
Templates book), dense matrix decompositions such as LU, QR, SVD (from the
Jama project), and some simple eigenvalue/eigenvector solvers.

It is available at

http://www.math.uib.no/~bjornoh/jmp

Both sources and classfiles are available. A preliminary users guide,
reference documentation and some simple examples are also there.

Subject: Source Code for Geometrically-exact Beam

Dear all,

I am looking for a research FEM source code that simulates a single 3D
time-dependent elastic beam using a geometrically-exact formulation. This
is also known variously as a Reissner or Simo-VuQuoc beam.

I would be most happy to get a research code that has been used to produce
one of the many papers in Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering
or any other journal or any other source code to help get me started.

In advance thanks,

Christophe Koudella

Subject: New Book on Krylov Subspace Methods

New book on Krylov subspace methods

I am proud to announce that my book "Iterative Krylov Methods for
Large Linear Systems" seems to have appeared with Cambridge Press
(April 15, 2003, ISBN 0521818281. In this book I have tried to share
my insights in how algorithms for iterative methods can be developed
and how their behavior can be understood. Examples have been included
and exercises are spread throughout the text, so that the book may
also be helpful as course material. It treats various methods in full
detail and with more explanation than in various papers (of myself and
others). I hope that this book will prove useful for students, researchers
and engineers.

I have not seen the book myself because of strange problems with
the mailing process (I hope that this only holds for my address)
and so I can state in all honesty that of all books this is the book that I
would like to have most.

Workshop Announcement & Call for Applications
WOMEN OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS: RESEARCH AND LEADERSHIP

A workshop on Women of Applied Mathematics: Research and Leadership will
be held October 8-10, 2003 at the University of Maryland at College
Park. The workshop, consisting of research symposia and career
development panel discussions, will provide a technical and professional
forum for ten senior women and twenty-five early-career women (approx.
5-12 years post Ph.D.) in applied mathematics.

The workshop has two objectives:

* To provide advice and guidance to women who are a few years past
the postdoctoral stage and are now facing new challenges as they
transition to positions beyond entry-level.
* To provide networking among applied mathematicians who have
become, or are striving to become, leaders in their fields.

The following senior participants have committed to participate.

* Marsha Berger, Courant Institute
* Lisa Fauci, Tulane Univ.
* Maria Klawe, Princeton
* Deborah Lockhart, National Science Foundation
* Joyce McLaughlin, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
* Linda Petzold, Univ. California, Santa Barbara
* Cynthia Phillips, Sandia National Labs
* Dianne O'Leary, Univ. Maryland
* Mary Wheeler, Univ. Texas
* Margaret Wright, Courant Institute

We are soliciting applications from early-career women in applied
mathematics to attend the workshop. Participants will receive travel
expenses. After the workshop, early-career participants are expected to
lead an activity promoting women in mathematics and submit a report
detailing that activity. Early-career is roughly as several years past
the postdoctoral stage, at the point where one is nearing or just past
promotion and facing an increase in leadership responsibilities (e.g.,
leading research teams, being PI or co-PI on large proposals, and/or
pursuing opportunities in management or administration). Roughly
speaking, applicants in this category would be 5-12 years past the Ph.D.
Application instructions are available on the web site listed below, and
applications received by July 1, 2003 will receive full consideration.

Web site: http://csmr.ca.sandia.gov/~tgkolda/workshop2003/

This workshop is organized by Dianne P. O'Leary (University of Maryland)

User Program Development Tool Research Group (UPDT-RG)
of the Global Grid Forum (GGF)

Workshop organizers: Thomas Hinke, NASA Ames
Thilo Kielmann, Vrije Universiteit
Ed Seidel, Albert Einstein Institute
Robert T. Hood, NASA Ames
Susanne Balle, HP

The Applications and Testbeds Research Group (APPS-RG) seeks to facilitate
the use of grid technology by application developers, and to attract new
application domains to the grid.

The User Program Development Tools for the Grid Research Group (UPDT-RG)
seeks to simplify the process of programming on the grid by facilitating
the development and deployment of grid-enabled tools such as debuggers and
performance tuning tools.

Recent experience shows that Grid users run their applications using
various kinds of additional (and frequently tailor-made) tools, ranging
from simple wrappers around Globus commands up to web-based application
portals.

The goals of this workshop are

- to provide a forum for (prospective) applications
utilizing Grids and to disseminate "lessons learned"
from Grid-enabling application codes

- to spread information about tools, toolkits and
other instruments for users and application
programmers

- to encourage users and application programmers to
make use of existing Grid infrastructure

We are looking for presentations on the workshops's subject.
Suggested topics for talks include, but are not limited to,
the following:

A. Experience in converting an existing application to run on the grid

B. Experience in designing a new application to run on the grid

C. Experience in using a grid-enabled application

D. Experience in using or creating tools that support the development or
use of grid applications

E. Thoughts on what the grid should provide to effectively support
applications

F. Thoughts and/or experience on the characteristics of applications or
particular application software that make them well suited for the grid,
or make them ill-suited to run on the grid

Subject: Workshop in Berkeley on the DOE ACTS Collection

FOURTH WORKSHOP ON THE DOE ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL SOFTWARE COLLECTION
Robust and High Performance Tools for Scientific Computing

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
August 5-8, 2003

The DOE Advanced CompuTational Software Collection (ACTS Collection,
http://acts.nersc.gov) comprises a set of tools mainly developed at the
Department of Energy's (DOE) laboratories. These
software tools aim to simplify the solution of common and important
computational problems and have substantially benefited a wide range of
scientific and industrial applications. These benefits are
accounted not only for running efficiently in high performing computing
environments but also realizing computation that would not have been
possible otherwise. Despite these successes, there is still
a need for a greater infrastructure to reach out academia and industry
through a dissemination and instruction on the state-of-the-art tools
for high performance computing environments and
simultaneously provide an umbrella for tool developers to receive the
feedback from these communities. This workshop is part of an approach to
build such an infrastructure.

The four-day workshop will present an introduction to the ACTS
Collection for application scientists whose research demand includes
either large amounts of computation, a large volume of
data manipulation, the use of robust numerical algorithms, or
combinations of these. The workshop will include a range of tutorials
on the tools (currently available in the collection and some
deliverables from the DOE SciDAC ISICs), discussion sessions aimed to
solve specific computational needs by the participants, and hands-on
practices using the NERSC's state-of-the-art computers.
We are planning to organize parallel sessions and group the tutorials by
topics, as follows:

Direct and Iterative Methods for the solution of linear and
non-linear systems of equations
PDE's and Multi-level Methods
Numerical Optimization
Structured and Unstructured meshes (Generation, Manipulation and
Computation)
Development of High Performance Computing applications
Performance monitoring and tuning
Grid computing

DOE will fully sponsor a limited number of graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows to participate in this event. This support includes
round-trip transportation to and from Berkeley, local
transportation, lodging, meals and workshop materials. Proposals from
other research scientists are also encouraged.

The deadline for applications is June 9, 2003 and they should be
submitted using the application on-line form:
http://acts.nersc.gov/events/Workshop2003/application.html.

Students and postdoctoral
fellows should submit an abstract describing the nature of their
work, future plans and/or current needs for computation. A letter of
recommendation from the applicant's supervisor also needs to be provided
using the recommendation on-line form:
http://acts.nersc.gov/events/Workshop2003/recommendation.html
The recommendation letter must also arrive no later than June 9, 2003.
Other applicants must submit a letter outlining their current work and future
plans and needs for computational resources with a list of
publications . For more information on the workshop, please contact Tony

Drummond at (510) 486-7624 or Osni Marques at (510) 486-5290.

Important Dates:

Proposal submission deadline: June 9, 2003
Proposal review completed and invitations sent: June 20, 2003
Attendee confirmation of participation deadline: June 30, 2003
