Subject: NSIPS Available in the NEOS server

Dear NA readers,

We are pleased to announce that the software package NSIPS v2.1 is now
available in the NEOS server (http://www-neos.mcs.anl.gov/)

We thank Hans D. Mittelmann for this implementation in the NEOS server.

NSIPS (Nonlinear Semi-Infinite Programming Solver) is a solver that uses
the SIPAMPL interface to connect to AMPL. The new version additionally
implements an interior point method for semi-infinite programming.

NSIPS addresses standard semi-infinite programming problems and the full
version requires the use of the NPSOL software. The full version can be
used in the NEOS server.

Subject: Root-finding for ODEs

Dear NA-Netters,

I have a classical system of ordinary differential equations :

y'(x) = Fj(x,y(x)) with y(x=o) = y0 , j=1, ... , n

My problem (i.e. event location or implicit output) is to
find a FIRST point Xs such that ONE of the equations (g-stop):

Gi(x,y(x)) = 0 i = 1, ..., m

is satisfied at x = Xs on the current integration interval
[x ; x+h].
On [x ; x+h], the ODEs'solution y(x) is computed by a dense
output algorithm.

So, the problem is to find the FIRST root of an equation
G(x,y(x)) = 0 on an interval [a ; b] , It is assumed that G is
a continuous function on [a ; b].
I am very interested by "good" root-finding(s) for the following cases:

=> G(x,y(x)) : polynomial form,
=> G(x,y(x)) : general function

Do you know effective methods (and free Fortran or C codes)
to solve this problem ? Any references (papers,preprints,
links, ...) would be very helpful.

Dear NA-Netters (another question about ODEs),

The position and the velocity partial derivatives of the
satellite motion with respect to any parameter appearing in
the acceleration model or to initial state may be obtained
by the numerical integration of a linear system of differential
equations with time varying coefficients:

Y''(t) = A(t)*Y(t) + B(t)*Y'(t) + C(t) (1)

Usually, this equations are integrated with the same classical
methods (Cowell, Stormer, Runge-Kutta, ..) as the nonlinear
ODEs system of the satellite motion :

X''(t) = F(t, X(t), X'(t))
with X(t): satellite position velocity vector

For the system (1), are there methods more effective than
traditional methods ?
Do you know effective methods (and free Fortran or C codes)
to solve this problem ? Any references (papers,preprints,
links, ...) would be very helpful.

The SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science & Engineering

The joint SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science & Engineering will be
presented at the First Joint Meeting of CAIMS and SIAM (which is the
24th Annual Meeting of CAIMS/SCMAI and the 2003 SIAM Annual Meeting) to
be held in Montreal, Canada, June 16-20, 2003.

The prize, established in 2002, is awarded in the area of computational
science in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development
and use of mathematical and computational tools and methods for the
solution of science and engineering problems. The prize is intended to
recognize one individual for outstanding research contributions to the
field of computational science and engineering. The contribution(s) for
which the award is made must be publicly available and may belong to any
aspect of computational science in its broadest sense.

Eligibility

There are no restrictions on eligibility beyond those specified above.

Description of Award

The award consists of a certificate and a cash prize.

Nominations

Nominations may be made by anyone, including members of the selection
committee. It is the responsibility of the nominator to provide all
relevant information to the selection committee, including a resume and
any letter(s) of support. In case his or her nominee will be chosen,
the nominator will also be asked to provide the draft of a citation of
about 100 words that can be read at the award ceremony.

The methods of Scientific Computing play an important role in research

sciences. The significance and impact of computer algebra methods and

a strong research background in any branch of the mathematical sciences,

At the IGPM (Institut fuer Geometrie und Praktische Mathematik) we are
currently developing the new multidimensional flow solver QUADFLOW.
This is part of the interdisciplinary collaborative research center
SFB401 "Flow Modulation and Fluid-Structure-Interaction" funded by
the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

In this project we can offer a full PhD/Postdoc position which
can be filled immediately. The salary is according to BAT IIa. The
appointment covers a period of 3 years but can be extended for
additional 3 years, provided that DFG will continue funding the project.

The main task will be to parallelize the QUADFLOW solver using the
Message Passinge Interface (MPI) and to run it on PC clusters as well as
on the Sun Fire SMP-Cluster of the Scientific Computing Center of the
RWTH Aachen.

We are looking for candidates with good skills in C++ and MPI. Some
background in numerical analysis and computational fluid dynamics would
be helpful.

PhD studentship in Intelligent Signal Processing

The primary purpose of this university-funded project is to develop novel
signal processing (in particular, filtering) techniques, and apply them in
microarray data analysis. Applicants must have (or hope to get) a First or
Upper Second Class Degree or Masters Degree (preferred) in the areas of
electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics or computer science.
Practical knowledge about one or more of the following areas would clearly be
an advantage: control and filtering theory, neural network, evolutionary
algorithm, numerical computation as well as stochastic analysis. The successful
candidate will join the Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) research group.

This is a three-year, fully funded PhD post (suitable for any UK/EU citizen).
The studentship will be funded at the normal rate (full home student fees +
10,840 Pounds per year living expenses), with the opportunity of undertaking
additional paid undergraduate teaching. Overseas students will have the
annual income around 4,000 Pounds, after paying the overseas fee. The start
date is as soon as possible.
