Subject: Comparing Krylov Linear Equation Solvers

Dear Colleagues,

Appeal for Help

We are preparing a work for publication, a significant part of
which will be comparisons of various Krylov LE solvers. Although
we have compared the basic versions of most available algorithms on
various standard problems (taken from the Harwell-Boeing and other
well-known collections) we do not have the resources to make similar
comparisons of the look-ahead and preconditioned versions. We are
therefore requesting any group or individual who has written such a
program to help us.

Our current thinking is that we would ask for the algorithms
to be tested on a set of problems provided by us but we would welcome
in addition tests on a similar number of problems chosen by the
programs' authors. This would permit algorithms that are particularly
good in a certain area to be displayed to advantage. The results would
be presented graphically, probably on a CD-ROM.

We would want the most stringent standards to be applied, e.g.
a convergence criterion of 10e-14 for the ratio of the residual and
the right-hand side norm, and we would wish to plot the exact residual
norms, not those computed recursively by the algorithm. We would also
ask that the data be presented in a particular format (a .mat file)
ready for presentation to our graph-plotting routines.

Any questions, suggestion, requests for further information
or (of course) offers to participate should be sent to either
broyden@csr.unibo.it or vespucci@spm.it

Thank you for co-operation,
C. G. Broyden and Maria-Teresa Vespucci.

Subject: Generalized Saddle-point Problem

In many applied problems, it is necessary to solve a saddle point
problem of the form

[ A B; B' 0] [x;y] = [f;g]

where A and B are matrices of size n \times n. A and B are symmetric and
indefinite. I am looking for suitable iterative solution procedures.

Subject: Matlab GUI for Pseudospectra

The Matlab GUI for pseudospectra (as demonstrated at the Copper Mountain
2000 conference) is now availale for download.

The web address is:
http://web.comlab.ox.ac.uk/oucl/work/tom.wright/psgui/index.html

It has been designed to make computing psuedospectra simpler and more
interactive. Some of the features include:

* Speed: once the GUI has been initialised, all computation is O(N^2)
* Interactive zooming with the mouse
* `Smart' default contour levels, and the ability to change the levels
plotted without re-computation
* Easy control over axes and grid size
* Choice of colour or black and white

There are two main areas of use for the GUI:

* To compute the full pseudospectra of dense matrices of dimension up
to the order of a thousand (available now)
* To compute a portion of the pseudospectra of large sparse matrices
around the eigenvalues determined using eigs (to be available for
Matlab version 6)

ISBN 0-387-98959-5.
http://www.springer.de/cgi-bin/search_book.pl?isbn=0-387-98959-5

The purpose of this book is to provide the mathematical foundations of
numerical methods, to analyze their basic theoretical properties
(stability, accuracy, computational complexity) and demonstrate
their performances on examples and counterexamples which outline their
pros and cons. This is done by using the MATLAB software environment
which is user-friendly and widely-adopted. Within any specific class of
problems, the most appropriate scientific computing algorithms are
reviewed, their theoretical analysis is carried out and the expected
results are verified on a MATLAB computer implementation. Every chapter is
supplied with examples, exercises and applications of the discussed theory
to the solution of real-life problems.

The Grid is an emerging computational infrastructure, similar to the
pervasive energy infrastructure provided by national power grids. Simulation
and Visualization on the Grid focuses on applications and technologies on
this emerging computational Grid. Readers will find interesting discussions
of such Grid technologies as distributed file I/O, clustering, CORBA
software infrastructure, tele-immersion, interaction environments,
visualization steering and virtual reality as well as applications in
biology, chemistry and physics. A lively panel discussion addresses current
successes and pitfalls of the Grid. This book provides an understanding of
the Grid that offers a persistent, wide-scale infrastructure for solving
problems.

Domain decomposition methods for modelling hydrocarbon reservoir formation

Basin modelling aims at reconstructing the time evolution of a sedimentary
basin in order to make quantitative predictions of geological phenomena
leading to oil accumulations. It accounts for porous medium compaction,
hydrocarbon formation and migration.

Recent evolutions of basin simulators have contributed to improve the
treatment of geological discontinuities such as faults. These faults divide
the basin into blocks whose deformations cause geological layers to slide
between themselves. A natural discretization of these complex geometries
involves sliding meshes which do not match.

The main scientific issue is the design of efficient and accurate finite
volume discretizations and solvers for single and mutiple phase Darcy flow
in highly hetereogeneous media for nonmatching grids. The domain
decomposition approach will be used as it enables efficient handling of
non-matching grids.

The candidate will join the scientific computing group of the Applied
Mathematics Departement of IFP. He will work within the basin modelling
and reservoir simulation projects. This is a join project with the Applied
Mathematics department of the Ecole Polytechnique, Paris (cmapx). The PhD
director is Frederic Nataf from the cmapx. Applicants should posess some
background in numerical simulation of PDE's and linear algebra as well
as programming experience in C. The fellowships apply only to non french
european citizens (including eastern europe but excluding Ukraine, Russia,
Bielorussia).

To apply, send resume, statement of research, and a CV to
roland.masson@ifp.fr as well as the coordinates of two references.
