Subject: A Graphical User Interface to LAPACK

We are pleased to announce the release of a graphical user interface
to LAPACK. The purpose of the GUI is to aid the user in both navigating
the LAPACK site and downloading LAPACK routines. Users not familiar
with LAPACK will find it helpful to review the LAPACK User's Guide before
working with the GUI.

The GUI can be accessed through Netlib at www.netlib.org/lapack/index.html
(click on LAPACK Search Engine) or directly at www.cs.colorado.edu/~lapack.

A prototype of the GUI was released in late April. Please visit the
site again to try the new, easier to use front end.

Subject: New Book, Abstract Convexity and Global Optimization

New Book

Abstract Convexity and Global Optimization
by Alexander Rubinov
Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2000
NONCONVEX OPTIMIZATION AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Volume 44, xvii + 490 pp.

This book consists of two parts. Firstly, the main notions of
abstract convexity and their applications in the study of some
classes of functions and sets are presented. Secondly, both
theoretical and numerical aspects of global optimization based on
abstract convexity are examined. Most of the book does not
require knowledge of advanced mathematics.

Classical methods of nonconvex mathematical programming,
being based on a local approximation, cannot be used to examine
and solve many problems of global optimization, and so there is a
clear need to develop special global tools for solving these
problems. Some of these tools are based on abstract convexity,
that is, on the representation of a function of a rather complicated
nature as the upper envelope of a set of fairly simple functions.

Contents: An introduction to abstract convexity.-- Elements of
monotonic analysis: IPH functions and notmal sets. -- Elements of
monotonic analysis: monotonic functions.-- Application to global
optimization: Lagrange and penalty functions.-- Elements of star-
shaped analysis--Supremal generators and their applications.--
Further abstract convexity.--Applications to global optimization:
duality. -- Application to global optimization: numerical methods.

EVALUATING DERIVATIVES
PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES OF ALGORITHMIC DIFFERENTIATION
Andreas Griewank
SIAM, Philadelphia
380 pages, Price $49.50 Members $39.60
ISBN 0-89871-451-6

Algorithmic, or automatic, differentiation (AD) is concerned with
the accurate and efficient evaluation of derivatives for functions
defined by computer programs. No truncation errors are incurred, and
the resulting numerical derivative values can be used for all
scientific computations that are based on linear, quadratic or even
higher order approximations to nonlinear scalar or vector functions.
This first comprehensive treatment of AD describes chainrule based
techniques for evaluating derivatives of composite functions with
particular emphasis on the reverse, or adjoint, mode. The
corresponding complexity analysis shows that gradients are
always relatively cheap, while the cost of evaluating Jacobian
and Hessian matrices ist found to be strongly dependent on problem
structure and its efficient exploitation.

The book is divided into three parts: a stand-alone introduction to the
fundamantals of AD and its software, a thorough treatment of methods
for sparse problems, and final chapters on higher derivatives,
nonsmooth problems, and program reversal schedules. Each of the
chapters concludes with examples and exercises suitable for
students with a basic understanding of differential calculus,
procedural programming, and numerical linear algebra.

2ND ANNOUNCEMENT

Navier-Stokes Equations: Computational Methods and Applications

This is the third in a series of conferences organised by Alastair
Wood (Dublin City University) and Sir Michael Berry (Bristol) to
honour the life and work of Sir George Gabriel Stokes at his
birthplace "within the sound of the Atlantic breakers". Like the 1998
Summer School, lectures will be held in the former Parochial School,
in the very room where Stokes received his primary education. Unlike
1998, attention will be concentrated on a single aspect of his work,
the Navier-Stokes Equations: computational methods and applications,
including asymptotic and perturbation methods, as well as numerical
analysis. There will also be talks on history and applications to
meterology and engineering. Because of the capacity of this scenic
and historic venue, attendance is restricted to 50.

The School will consist of two components, an Instructional Course and
a Workshop, and participants may attend either or both.

4th - 5th August
Instructional Course on new numerical methods for the Navier-Stokes
Equations, organised by J. Miller (Dublin) and G. Shishkin

(Ekaterinburg) with A. Hegarty (Limerick) and E. O'Riordan (Dublin
City). (http:\\webpages.dcu.ie\~wooda\stokes\agenda.htm)

6th - 9th August
Workshop with invited lectures from P. Clarkson (Kent), A. D. Craik
(St. Andrews), L. Crane (Dublin), A. R. Davies (Aberystwyth), P. G.
Drazin (Bristol), V. Entov (Moscow), J. R. King (Nottingham), P. Lynch
(Met Eireann), E. Mansfield (Kent), B. Straughan (Glasgow). Lectures
are scheduled for mornings and early evening, leaving afternoons free
for discussions and interactions.

The qualified candidate should have completed an academic education
(i.e. have a PhD degree or equivalent) in Numerical Analysis
with a strong affinity for Computing Science.
Furthermore, applicants should have a strong background concerning
object oriented visualization tools (OpenGL/OpenInventor/VTK)
and object oriented interpreters (CINT/Corba/Com).
Each applicant is urged to download the NumLab questionnaire at
