Subject: Interactive Numerical Examples in ETNA

Many papers in computational mathematics contain numerical
examples that illustrate the theory discussed, or the virtues
or shortcomings of numerical methods. The examples, in general,
depend on certain parameters, whose values are chosen by the
author of the paper. A reader may be interested in studying
the examples for other parameter values, but typically this is
not straightforward. Computer programs may have to be written
or requested from the author of the paper.

The Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis (ETNA) makes
it possible to publish interactive examples that allow readers
to vary parameter values. Presently, two papers

J. Baglama, D. Calvetti and L. Reichel, Fast Leja points,
ETNA 7 (1998), pp. 124-140,

R. S. Varga and A. Krautstengl, On Gersgorin-type problems
and ovals of Cassini, ETNA 8 (1999), pp. 15-20,

illustrate this feature. Click on the ``interactive supplement''
for these papers for a demonstration.

Authors of papers accepted for publication in ETNA are encouraged
to supply interactive examples. The ETNA staff will assist with
the design and Java programming of the examples.

ETNA is available at

http://etna.mcs.kent.edu

and at mirror sites. In addition volumes 1-10 of ETNA are available
on a new CDROM. The ETNA CDROM contains papers published in ETNA
1993-2000, interactive examples, a search engine and web browsers.
A limited number of CDROMs are available for $10 each. Please send
e-mail to etna@mcs.kent.edu if you would like your own portable copy
of ETNA on a CDROM.

Subject: Five New Codes for Stiff ODEs and DAEs

This is to announce some new codes and modifications of existing codes
for the solution of stiff initial value problems and differential algebraic
equations of index less than 4. All of these codes are based on the well
known approach defined by Modified Extended Backward Differentiation Formulae.
The codes are MEBDFDAE.f which is already in existence and has been
slightly modified. This solves linearly implicit DAEs of the form
My'=f(x,y). In particular it solves stiff ODEs when M=I.
In addition we have a code MEBDFV.f which solves
M(y)y'=f(x,y).
Also there is a code MEBDFI.f which solves general problems of the form
G(x,y,y')=0.
In addition there are two sparse solvers.
These are MEBDFSO.f which solves sparse systems of intial value ODEs
and MEBDFSD.f which solves sparse systems of DAEs.
These last two codes have particular applications
in the method of lines solution of time dependent partial differential
equations. Extensive results comparing these new codes with a whole variety
of existing codes together with double precision FORTRAN versions of all
the new codes are on the Imperial College web page. This can be
accessed at

Subject: Faculty Positions at Uppsala University

The Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University invites
applications for two positions as

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER in HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING

at the Department of Scientific Computing.

Ref.no UFV-PA 2000/1512 and UFV-PA 2000/1513.

Duties

Teaching, research, administration and information.

The department has a need for teaching and development of courses in High
Performance Computing and neighbouring fields both in undergraduate and PhD
education.

Currently the research is mainly directed towards numerical solution of
partial differential equations with applications in fluid mechanics,
acoustics, electromagnetics and biotechnology. Most of the applications
require development of methods and programs for high performance parallel
computers.

The lecturers are supposed to be independent researchers, to get external
research funding of their own, and to cooperate with other researchers at
the department. The ambition of the department is 50 percent research time
or more for all lecturers.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a lectureship a candidate must hold a doctoral degree
and possess pedagogical skill. In the evaluation of the pedagogical skill
experience of planning, course giving and evaluation of teaching will be
important as well as supervision and examination. Ability to teach in
Swedish or English is a requirement. Those who cannot teach in Swedish are
expected to learn this within three years after appointment. The university
also requires that the applicant has a formal pedagogical education. Those
who have not have to take a pedagogical course during the first year.

An applicant who is offered a position as a senior lecturer will be
promoted to full professor if she or he asks for that and is found to be
competent after an evaluation procedure.

Criteria for ranking of candidates
The main criteria are scientific and pedagogical skills, with equal
emphasis on both.

When evaluating the scientific skill merits in computational methods for
large-scale problems and implementation on parallel computers are
important.

Administrative skills and ability to cooperate with other persons will be
taken into account as well as ability to inform about research and
development.

Recruitment objective
According to the equal opportunity policy of the university applications
from women are especially invited.

Application

The application should be directed to the Vice Chancellor, Uppsala
University, Box 256, SE-75105 Uppsala, telefax +46 18 471 2000 no later
than May 5th, 2000. If an application is sent by fax, the original should
follow as soon as possible.

The applicant is required to submit, in three copies,

1.a curriculum vitae and copies of degrees obtained and other documents
of relevance, all to be signed and witnessed;
2.a short account of her/his scientific and teaching experience;
3.an account of pedagogical merits. A form which could guide this
account can be obtained from the office of the Faculty for
Science and Technology, Box 256, SE-75105 Uppsala or via e-mail to
Margareta.Sollenberg@uadm.uu.se, phone +46 18 471 18 69.
4.a list of scientific and pedagogical publications and two copies of
each of the publications according to the above list.
